Which companies sponsor visas for civil engineers in Illinois?
Engineering and construction firms are the most active sponsors. AECOM, Jacobs, WSP, Burns & McDonnell, and Thornton Tomasetti have all filed H-1B petitions for civil engineering roles in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Transportation and Chicago-area municipal agencies also hire international engineers, though government positions involve additional hiring steps. Consulting firms working on infrastructure contracts tend to sponsor more consistently than smaller regional contractors.
Which visa types are most common for civil engineer roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for civil engineers in Illinois. Civil engineering qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. Canadian and Mexican engineers may qualify for the TN visa under the USMCA, which does not require an annual lottery. Engineers with extraordinary ability in their field may also explore the O-1A, though this is less common for mid-career applicants.
Which cities in Illinois have the most civil engineer sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the majority of civil engineer sponsorship activity in Illinois, driven by large infrastructure investment, transit projects, and a concentration of engineering consulting firms. The broader Chicago metro, including suburbs like Schaumburg, Naperville, and Oak Brook, also hosts significant employer presence. Peoria and Rockford have smaller but active engineering markets tied to manufacturing and municipal infrastructure. Springfield sees demand through state government and transportation agencies.
How to find civil engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles where employers are open to visa sponsorship, including civil engineer positions across Illinois. Rather than sorting through general job boards where sponsorship willingness is unclear, Migrate Mate focuses the search on verified sponsorship opportunities. You can filter by state and role type, making it practical to target Illinois-based civil engineering positions at firms with an established sponsorship history.
Are there state-specific factors that affect civil engineer sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois has a strong civil engineering pipeline through universities like the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Illinois Institute of Technology, which means employers are familiar with OPT and H-1B sponsorship processes for international graduates. The state's ongoing infrastructure investment under federal programs has increased demand for experienced engineers, particularly in transportation and water systems. Professional Engineer licensure in Illinois is eventually expected for senior roles, though it is not required at the time of sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored civil engineer jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
