- Define and govern the metadata architecture: active metadata strategy, data catalog integration (Unity Catalog, Alation, Collibra, or equivalent), and lineage representation across pipeline and model layers.
- Lead technical design reviews for new data products, pipelines, and integrations. Provide architectural guidance on model design, entity resolution, and cross-system key management.
- Identify and document the System of Record (SoR), Single Source of Truth (SSoT), and Single Version of Truth (SVoT) for each entity within each domain, and govern the distinction between them across the Medallion architecture.
- Partner with data governance, engineering, analytics, and architecture teams to ensure models are implemented in a governed and practical way.
- Enable the implementation of enterprise models within modern cloud and Lakehouse platforms, including Databricks, with appropriate governance and reuse.
- Design and evolve ontologies, taxonomies, and semantic models that support interoperability, metadata, analytics, and AI initiatives.
- Advise leadership and delivery teams on target-state data architecture, domain ownership, and long-term information strategy.
- Mentor architects, modelers, and senior technical teams in best practices for enterprise data and semantic architecture.
- Conduct a structured audit of existing data models, domain definitions, and any nascent ontology work, producing a gap assessment and prioritized roadmap.
- Publish a canonical domain map to serve as the authoritative list of data domains, their bounded contexts, primary entities, and system-of-record mappings.

Which companies in Illinois sponsor visas for data architects?
Large Illinois employers with established H-1B sponsorship histories for data and technology roles include Boeing, United Airlines, Allstate, Walgreens Boots Alliance, and major financial institutions headquartered in Chicago such as Northern Trust and Morningstar. Consulting firms with significant Illinois operations, including Accenture and Deloitte, also regularly sponsor data architects through H-1B petitions filed with USCIS.
Which visa types are most common for data architect roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is by far the most common visa for data architects in Illinois, given that the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Candidates already holding L-1B or O-1 status and those on OPT or STEM OPT also fill data architect positions while pursuing or awaiting employer-sponsored petitions.
Which cities in Illinois have the most data architect sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of data architect sponsorship opportunities in Illinois, driven by its concentration of enterprise employers across finance, healthcare, logistics, and consulting. The broader metro area, including suburbs like Schaumburg, Downers Grove, and Rosemont, also hosts significant tech and corporate campuses. Outside the Chicago metro, data architect roles with sponsorship are far less common.
How to find data architect visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify data architect openings in Illinois where employers have indicated willingness to sponsor. Because sponsorship is employer-dependent and not always advertised clearly, using a platform like Migrate Mate that surfaces sponsorship-verified roles saves significant time compared to manually screening general job listings.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for data architects seeking visa sponsorship?
Illinois employers must comply with Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements when filing H-1B petitions, and data architect roles in the Chicago metro typically fall under higher prevailing wage levels given the area's cost of labor classifications. The University of Illinois and Northwestern University also generate a consistent pipeline of international graduates entering data architecture roles, meaning Illinois employers are generally accustomed to sponsorship processes for this occupation.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored data architect jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
