Which companies in Illinois sponsor visas for developers?
Large Illinois employers with consistent track records of developer visa sponsorship include Accenture, Motorola Solutions, Discover Financial Services, United Airlines, and Walgreens Boots Alliance. Major consulting firms with Chicago offices, including Deloitte and Infosys, also file significant numbers of developer petitions annually. Enterprise technology teams within financial services and healthcare companies represent another reliable category of sponsoring employers in the state.
Which visa types are most common for developer roles in Illinois?
The H-1B visa is by far the most common visa for developer roles in Illinois, as software development generally qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican developers in qualifying roles. Developers already authorized to work in the U.S. may also transition to employer-sponsored immigrant visa pathways, such as EB-2 or EB-3, through PERM labor certification.
How to find developer visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to browse developer roles in Illinois without sorting through positions that do not offer sponsorship. Because Chicago's developer market spans finance, logistics, healthcare, and consulting, using Migrate Mate's role and location filters helps narrow results to the sectors where international hiring is most active. Setting up alerts for Illinois developer postings means new sponsored opportunities surface quickly.
Which cities in Illinois have the most developer sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of developer visa sponsorship activity in Illinois. The Loop and River North neighborhoods are home to large enterprise employers and consultancies, while suburbs such as Schaumburg, Deerfield, and Lisle host corporate technology campuses for companies including Motorola Solutions and Walgreens. Champaign-Urbana sees a smaller but steady pipeline of developer opportunities connected to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and affiliated startups.
Are there any Illinois-specific factors developers should know about for visa sponsorship?
Illinois employers filing H-1B petitions must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the specific role and metropolitan area, and Chicago's prevailing wages for software developers reflect a major metro market. The University of Illinois system produces a large pipeline of international STEM graduates, so Illinois employers are generally experienced with OPT-to-H-1B transitions. Developers in financial services or healthcare may encounter additional compliance reviews, as those sectors often have heightened scrutiny around specialty occupation determinations.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored developer jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
