With us, you’ll create a boundless impact that transforms your career—and the lives of people across the world.
You Are:
UST is searching for a Python Full Stack Developer to join our Cloud Platform Engineering team, supporting the migration of on-premises batch processing systems to AWS. This role goes beyond a pure lift-and-shift — it involves refactoring legacy batch jobs, many currently written in PERL, into modern, cloud-native Python applications and services.
The opportunity:
- Refactor and migrate legacy on-premises batch processing jobs, including existing PERL scripts, into Python-based services on AWS
- Design, build, and maintain full stack applications (Python backend, web front end) to support batch job monitoring and operations
- Re-architect batch workflows to run on AWS-native services (e.g., AWS Batch, Lambda, Step Functions) as appropriate
- Analyze existing PERL scripts and on-prem batch logic to identify functionality, dependencies, and edge cases prior to refactoring
- Write automated tests to validate that refactored jobs produce equivalent results to the legacy systems
- Collaborate with cloud engineers on infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and cutover sequencing for migrated workloads
- Troubleshoot and resolve data or processing discrepancies surfaced during migration validation
- Document refactored logic, architecture decisions, and operational runbooks
This position description identifies the responsibilities and tasks typically associated with the performance of the position. Other relevant essential functions may be required.
What you need:
- (Must Have) Python Development
- Strong hands-on experience building production applications and scripts in Python
- Experience with batch/ETL processing patterns — scheduling, error handling, retries, idempotency
- Comfortable working with Python data processing libraries and writing automated tests
- Full Stack Development
- Experience building both backend services and front-end interfaces (e.g., React, Vue, or similar)
- Experience designing and consuming REST APIs
- Comfortable owning a feature end-to-end, from data layer to UI
- PERL Scripting
- Able to read, understand, and refactor existing PERL scripts
- Experience translating PERL-based batch logic into equivalent, maintainable Python code
- Lift & Shift / Refactoring Migration Experience
- Has been a core contributor to a migration project involving refactoring — not just re-hosting — legacy code
- Experience with batch job migration, including validation and parallel-run/cutover strategies
- Comfortable working with legacy, undocumented code and reverse-engineering business logic
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
These skills will strengthen a candidate's profile but are not a hard requirement.

Which companies sponsor visas for full stack engineers in Illinois?
Large technology employers with established Illinois presences, including Salesforce, Morningstar, Accenture, and Zebra Technologies, have consistent records of sponsoring full stack engineers. Chicago's fintech sector, with companies like Enova and Avant, also sponsors regularly. Established consulting firms and healthcare IT companies such as Outcome Health round out the sponsorship pipeline for full stack roles in the state.
Which visa types are most common for full stack engineer roles in Illinois?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for full stack engineers in Illinois, as software development roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Australians may also qualify for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and is easier to obtain. Candidates already holding OPT or STEM OPT authorization are often the most attractive to Illinois employers because no cap lottery is required.
Which cities in Illinois have the most full stack engineer sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of full stack engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois. The River North, West Loop, and Fulton Market neighborhoods are particularly dense with tech employers and startups. Suburban areas including Deerfield, Schaumburg, and Naperville also have sponsoring employers, particularly larger enterprise technology and healthcare IT companies with corporate campuses outside the city.
How to find full stack engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search full stack engineer roles in Illinois without sifting through postings that don't support international candidates. Because sponsorship willingness is not always clearly stated in job postings, Migrate Mate's curated approach saves significant time for candidates targeting Illinois employers in fintech, healthcare IT, and enterprise software.
Are there state-specific considerations for full stack engineers seeking sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois does not have state-level visa programs, so sponsorship depends entirely on individual employers. Chicago's strong university pipeline, including graduates from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern, and the University of Chicago, means employers are familiar with OPT and H-1B processes. Illinois employers sponsoring H-1B roles must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the Chicago metropolitan area, which tend to be competitive given the city's cost of living.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored full stack engineer jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
