Which companies sponsor visas for structural engineers in Illinois?
Large engineering and construction consultancies are the most active sponsors in Illinois. AECOM, WSP, Thornton Tomasetti, Skidmore Owings and Merrill, and Alfred Benesch and Company have all filed Labor Condition Applications for structural engineering roles in the state. Infrastructure-focused firms tied to Illinois Department of Transportation contracts and Chicago Transit Authority projects also appear regularly in sponsorship records.
Which visa types are most common for structural engineer roles in Illinois?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa category for structural engineers in Illinois, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Some employers also sponsor O-1A visas for engineers with exceptional credentials or significant project recognition. Canadian and Mexican nationals working in structural engineering may qualify for TN visa status under the engineer category.
Which cities in Illinois have the most structural engineer sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of structural engineering sponsorship activity in Illinois, driven by its concentration of engineering consultancies, high-rise construction, and public infrastructure investment. Rockford and Peoria see smaller volumes of openings tied to regional transportation and industrial facility projects. For roles outside Chicago, positions are more often found with statewide engineering firms or government contractors.
How to find structural engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles where employers have a documented history of visa sponsorship, which is particularly useful for structural engineers in Illinois given how sponsorship patterns vary by firm size and project type. Searching Migrate Mate for structural engineer roles in Illinois surfaces opportunities at consultancies, infrastructure contractors, and public-sector-adjacent firms in the Chicago metro and beyond.
Are there any Illinois-specific factors structural engineers should know about visa sponsorship?
Illinois employers filing H-1B petitions for structural engineers must meet the Department of Labor prevailing wage for the relevant occupation and metropolitan area, with Chicago's wage levels reflecting its high cost of living. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Illinois Institute of Technology produce significant structural engineering graduate talent, meaning many sponsoring firms in the state are already familiar with OPT-to-H-1B transition timelines for international candidates.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored structural engineer jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
