Which companies sponsor visas for structural engineers in Massachusetts?
Several large engineering and construction firms with Massachusetts offices have consistent records of sponsoring structural engineers. WSP, Arup, Skanska, Simpson Gundersen & Associates, and Thornton Tomasetti all appear in Department of Labor disclosure data for structural and civil engineering roles in the state. Smaller specialty firms also sponsor, particularly those working on Boston's ongoing transit and infrastructure projects.
Which visa types are most common for structural engineer roles in Massachusetts?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for structural engineers in Massachusetts, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in civil or structural engineering. Some employers also sponsor through the O-1A for engineers with significant project achievements or publications. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for the TN visa under the engineer category without entering the H-1B lottery.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most structural engineer sponsorship jobs?
Boston accounts for the largest share of structural engineer sponsorship activity in Massachusetts, driven by commercial development, transit expansion, and institutional construction. Cambridge is also active, particularly for engineers working with universities and research institutions. Worcester and Springfield have smaller but growing markets tied to regional infrastructure and municipal projects. Remote or hybrid arrangements are less common for structural roles due to site visit requirements.
How to find structural engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship, making it easier to identify Massachusetts structural engineer roles where employers have indicated willingness to sponsor. Rather than sorting through thousands of unfiltered postings, you can search by role and state to surface relevant opportunities at firms like WSP, Arup, or Skanska that have active Massachusetts hiring and a track record of sponsoring engineering talent.
Are there any state-specific considerations for structural engineers seeking visa sponsorship in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts requires structural engineers to hold a Professional Engineer license for signing and sealing drawings, which is issued by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers. International candidates on H-1B status can work toward PE licensure, but employers often prefer candidates already in the licensing pipeline. The state's large public infrastructure investment, including MBTA modernization programs, has sustained steady demand for sponsored structural engineering hires.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored structural engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
