This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who has worked within insurance companies, fraternal benefit organizations, or financial services organizations and understands statutory accounting principles, GAAP reporting, and financial compliance processes. The Accountant will work closely with leadership, auditors, and external partners to ensure accurate financial reporting, timely reconciliations, and compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting & Financial Operations:
- Perform daily accounting activities including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports in accordance with GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP).
- Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, pension payments, annuity accounting, and claims-related accounting activities.
- Reconcile bank accounts, investment accounts, and balance sheet accounts.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow tracking.
Regulatory Reporting & Compliance:
- Support preparation of statutory filings and financial reports required by insurance regulatory agencies.
- Maintain compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist during external audits, regulatory reviews, and internal audit activities.
- Maintain organized financial documentation and supporting schedules.
Internal Controls & Process Support:
- Follow established internal controls and accounting procedures to ensure financial accuracy and data integrity.
- Assist in monitoring financial transactions and identifying discrepancies or irregularities.
- Support fraud prevention and payment verification processes.
Collaboration & Administrative Support:
- Work closely with finance leadership, auditors, banks, investment advisors, and third-party vendors.
- Assist with special accounting projects and financial analysis as needed.
- Support process improvements and operational efficiency initiatives within the accounting department.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3–7+ years of accounting experience.
- Experience working in:
- Insurance companies
- Fraternal benefit organizations
- Financial services organizations
- Strong understanding of:
- General ledger accounting
- Account reconciliations
- Financial reporting
- GAAP accounting principles
- Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP)
