Which companies in Iowa sponsor visas for data science engineers?
Principal Financial Group and Nationwide Insurance in Des Moines have documented histories of H-1B visa sponsorship for data and analytics roles. Collins Aerospace in Cedar Rapids hires data science engineers for defense and manufacturing applications. The University of Iowa and Iowa State University sponsor roles through both H-1B and J-1 visa pathways. Smaller agtech and insurtech firms in the state also file periodically, though less predictably than these larger employers.
Which visa types are most common for data science engineer roles in Iowa?
The H-1B is the most common visa for data science engineers in Iowa, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as computer science, statistics, or engineering. University-affiliated employers also use J-1 and O-1 visas in some cases. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify for TN visa status under the USMCA in computer-related occupations.
Which cities in Iowa have the most data science engineer sponsorship jobs?
Des Moines accounts for the largest share of data science engineer sponsorship activity in Iowa, driven by its concentration of financial services and insurance companies. Cedar Rapids is the second-strongest market, with aerospace and manufacturing firms driving demand. Iowa City and Ames are smaller but active markets due to the presence of the University of Iowa and Iowa State University, both of which hire international researchers and technical staff.
How to find data science engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship, making it easier to identify data science engineer openings in Iowa without sorting through roles that won't support international candidates. You can search by state and job title to surface positions at employers like Principal Financial Group, Collins Aerospace, and Iowa's university systems. Filtering by sponsorship status upfront saves time and focuses your applications on employers already set up to hire internationally.
Are there state-specific considerations for data science engineers seeking sponsorship in Iowa?
Iowa does not have a state-level immigration program, so sponsorship depends entirely on the individual employer. Prevailing wage determinations for data science engineer roles in Iowa are set by the Department of Labor and reflect local market rates, which tend to be lower than coastal cities. This can make Iowa employers more accessible for sponsorship in budget terms. University and research institution employers in Iowa City and Ames often have established international hiring processes, which can simplify the sponsorship experience.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored data science engineer jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
