INTRODUCTION
We are seeking a highly technical Sr. AI Product Manager who operates at the intersection of product strategy, data science, and engineering. This role is designed for someone who can think like a product leader, reason like a data scientist, and collaborate like an engineer—translating complex business problems into scalable AI-driven solutions.
You will lead the development of AI-powered products and agentic systems that transform WEX’s internal operations. This includes owning the end-to-end product lifecycle—from opportunity identification and problem framing to experimentation, productionization, and continuous optimization.
This is not a pure delivery or coordination role. You are expected to bring strong technical depth (in AI/ML systems, data, and architecture) paired with a product mindset—prioritizing impact, usability, and measurable outcomes.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities):
-
Product Strategy & Ownership: Define and own the roadmap for AI-driven products and intelligent automation initiatives. Identify high-impact opportunities where AI/Agentic can drive efficiency, reduce cost, or unlock new capabilities across WEX.
-
Problem Framing & Opportunity Identification: Work closely with stakeholders to deeply understand workflows, data ecosystems, and operational pain points. Translate ambiguous business problems into well-defined AI product opportunities and hypotheses.
-
Technical Leadership: Partner closely with data scientists and engineers to design scalable solutions. Contribute to decisions around model selection, architecture, data strategy, and system design—ensuring feasibility and long-term maintainability.
-
AI Product Development (0 1 and Scale): Lead the development of AI-powered applications, including LLM-based systems, agentic workflows, and automation tools. Drive rapid experimentation (POCs, prototypes) while guiding successful solutions into production.
-
Data & Experimentation-Driven Decision Making: Define success metrics, design experiments, and leverage data to evaluate performance. Continuously iterate on models, prompts, workflows, and user experiences to improve outcomes.
-
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as the bridge between business, engineering, and data teams. Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and align stakeholders around priorities, tradeoffs, and impact.
-
Operationalization & Continuous Improvement: Ensure production systems are reliable, measurable, and continuously improving. Monitor performance, gather feedback, and evolve solutions based on real-world usage and changing business needs.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
What We’re Looking For (Qualifications):
-
Experience: 5+ years in product management, data science, ML engineering, or related technical roles. Proven experience building or leading AI/ML-powered products from concept to production.
-
Technical Depth: Strong understanding of machine learning, LLMs, and modern AI architectures. Hands-on experience with Python, APIs, and data systems. Familiarity with LLM frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex) and model providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.). Ability to engage deeply in discussions on model behavior, prompt design, evaluation, and system tradeoffs.
-
Product Mindset: Demonstrated ability to define product vision, prioritize effectively, and deliver measurable outcomes. Experience balancing speed vs. scalability, experimentation vs. production rigor.
-
Analytical & Systems Thinking: Strong ability to break down complex systems, understand dependencies, and design end-to-end solutions. Comfort working with ambiguous problems and incomplete data.
-
Communication & Influence: Excellent ability to communicate across technical and non-technical audiences. Strong stakeholder management in cross-functional environments.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Background in data science, machine learning, or software engineering.
- Experience building or managing agentic systems or AI automation workflows.
- Cloud experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP), including AI/ML services.
- Strong SQL and experience working with large-scale data systems.
- Experience in Agile/Scrum environments.
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field.
COMPENSATION
- Pay Range: $155,000 - $175,000
The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. WEX's comprehensive and market competitive benefits are designed to support your personal and professional well-being. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurances, retirement savings plan, paid time off, health savings account, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, disability insurance, tuition reimbursement, and more.
Pay Range: $125,300.00 - $154,100.00

Which companies in Maine sponsor visas for software engineering managers?
WEX Inc., headquartered in Portland, is one of Maine's most active technology employers and has a track record of H-1B visa sponsorship for senior technical roles. IDEXX Laboratories in Westbrook also hires engineering leadership with sponsorship history. Smaller Portland-based technology firms and fintech companies have also sponsored software engineering managers, though the volume is lower than major metro markets.
Which visa types are most common for software engineering manager roles in Maine?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for software engineering managers in Maine, as the role typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, or a related field, satisfying the specialty occupation requirement. Candidates already holding L-1A status through an intracompany transfer are another pathway, particularly for managers relocating from a foreign affiliate of a Maine-based employer.
How to find software engineering manager visa sponsorship jobs in Maine?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search software engineering manager roles in Maine without sorting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. Because Maine has a smaller tech market than states like California or Washington, filtering by sponsorship upfront saves significant time. Migrate Mate surfaces roles from employers in Portland and beyond that have demonstrated sponsorship history for technical leadership positions.
Which cities in Maine have the most software engineering manager sponsorship jobs?
Portland is by far the most active city for software engineering manager sponsorship in Maine. It hosts the state's largest concentration of technology employers, including financial technology and healthcare IT companies. South Portland and Westbrook, both within the Greater Portland area, are also worth targeting given the presence of IDEXX Laboratories and other mid-size tech operations. Outside the Portland metro, sponsorship opportunities become significantly less frequent.
Are there any state-specific considerations for software engineering manager visa sponsorship in Maine?
Maine's tech workforce is smaller than major coastal hubs, which means employers sponsoring software engineering managers are often larger, established companies rather than early-stage startups. The state's university pipeline, including the University of Maine system, produces local technical talent but limited senior engineering leadership, which can work in favor of experienced international candidates. Employers must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the Portland or Augusta wage areas, which are tracked separately from national averages.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software engineering manager jobs in Maine?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
