Which companies sponsor visas for structural engineers in Maryland?
Large engineering and infrastructure firms are the most consistent sponsors for structural engineers in Maryland. Companies like AECOM, Jacobs, WSP, Stantec, and Thornton Tomasetti have a history of H-1B filings for structural roles. Federal contractors working on government facilities and transportation projects in the Baltimore-Washington corridor also sponsor regularly, as project scale and technical specialization typically support the specialty occupation determination required for sponsorship.
Which visa types are most common for structural engineer roles in Maryland?
The H-1B is the most common visa for structural engineers in Maryland, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in civil or structural engineering. Some candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship pursue the TN visa under the engineer category, which doesn't require a petition or lottery. Australian citizens may also qualify for the E-3 visa, which has a dedicated allocation and no lottery.
Which cities in Maryland have the most structural engineer sponsorship jobs?
Baltimore is Maryland's primary hub for structural engineering sponsorship, with firms concentrated in the Inner Harbor area and along the I-270 technology corridor. Rockville, Bethesda, and Silver Spring benefit from proximity to Washington D.C. and federal contracting activity. Annapolis sees demand tied to state government infrastructure work. Smaller markets like Towson and Columbia also have engineering offices for firms serving the broader Mid-Atlantic region.
How to find structural engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Maryland?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles offering visa sponsorship, so you can search structural engineer positions in Maryland without sorting through employers who won't sponsor. The platform is built for international candidates, so listings are screened for sponsorship intent. Focusing on firms with active H-1B or TN filings in Maryland's infrastructure and transportation sectors, particularly those working on Maryland DOT or federal contracts, improves your chances of finding genuine opportunities.
Are there state-specific considerations for structural engineers seeking sponsorship in Maryland?
Maryland's Professional Engineer licensure is administered by the Maryland State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. While licensure isn't required to obtain a visa, many senior structural roles require or prefer a PE license, and Maryland reciprocates with most other states. The University of Maryland's engineering programs create a pipeline of local talent, but international candidates with experience in bridge engineering, foundation design, or federal facility projects remain competitive for sponsored positions.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored structural engineer jobs in Maryland?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
