INTRODUCTION
As a Staff Software Engineer within the core servicing platform, you'll build the tools and infrastructure that make every engineer in the vertical faster, sharper, and more capable. The core servicing platform is the team behind the core systems that power our servicing business at scale — and as we drive a major re-platforming initiative toward modern, scalable, and resilient solutions that support long-term growth and innovation.
You'll guide strategy, set technical direction and solve complex, cross team problems. You are a force multiplier by enabling engineers, and elevating team skills. You design and build the autonomous AI-development infrastructure - the harnesses, scaffolding, context engineering systems, and workflow automation.
Staff Software Engineers are senior individual contributors who drive meaningful, cross-team technical impact through deep technical execution and hands-on leadership. Staff Engineers are the most effective builders on the team: they tackle the hardest implementation problems, establish patterns through working code, and raise the technical floor for engineers around them. In the Agentic Engineering Systems role, this means designing and delivering the context engineering infrastructure, AI harness frameworks, and developer automation that enable the core servicing platform's engineering teams to work at a new level of velocity - directly supporting the re-platforming initiative and its goals of modern, scalable, resilient solutions.
ABOUT THE ROLE
- Design and build AI harness and scaffolding systems that operationalize AI coding tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and others) across the core servicing platform's engineering workflows.
- Architect and implement context engineering infrastructure - prompt systems, context retrieval patterns, knowledge packaging, and evaluation frameworks that make AI tools accurate and trustworthy at scale.
- Build workflow automation that integrates AI assistance into CI/CD pipelines, code review, testing, and developer feedback loops.
- Develop reusable tooling, templates, and frameworks that teams across the vertical can adopt without requiring deep AI expertise.
- Work directly with engineers across the core servicing platform to understand real workflow friction, then build tooling that eliminates it.
- Stay current on the rapidly evolving AI developer tooling landscape and bring forward-looking recommendations grounded in practical applicability, informed by the platform's re-platforming roadmap.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's or higher in Computer Science or a related field.
- 8+ years in professional software engineering roles.
- Demonstrated experience building developer tooling, automation systems, or AI-assisted workflow infrastructure in a production engineering environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Hands-on expertise building context engineering systems - including prompt architecture, retrieval-augmented generation patterns, and evaluation harnesses for LLM-powered tooling.
- Deep practical experience with AI coding tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalents) and the ability to extend and customize them for team-scale deployment.
- Strong engineering fundamentals, with experience building developer tooling and CI/CD pipeline integrations.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate engineer workflow needs into durable tooling.

Which companies in Michigan sponsor visas for staff software engineers?
Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis are among the most active sponsors for staff software engineers in Michigan, particularly for roles in connected vehicle platforms, embedded systems, and cloud infrastructure. Beyond automotive, companies like Rocket Companies, Consumers Energy, and various Ann Arbor-based technology firms and University of Michigan affiliated research organizations have consistent H-1B sponsorship histories for senior engineering positions.
Which visa types are most common for staff software engineer roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for staff software engineers in Michigan, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Some candidates at the staff level with extraordinary recognition may qualify for the O-1A. Intracompany transfers to Michigan-based offices may also use the L-1B for specialized knowledge workers.
How to find staff software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship willingness, making it straightforward to browse staff software engineer roles in Michigan without sorting through positions that won't support work authorization. You can filter by state and seniority level to surface relevant openings at automotive technology companies, enterprise software firms, and research-driven employers concentrated in the Detroit metro and Ann Arbor areas.
Which cities in Michigan have the most staff software engineer sponsorship jobs?
The Detroit metropolitan area, including Dearborn and Auburn Hills, generates the highest volume of staff software engineer sponsorship opportunities due to the headquarters presence of major automotive manufacturers and their technology subsidiaries. Ann Arbor is a strong secondary market, driven by University of Michigan affiliates, health technology companies, and a growing startup ecosystem. Grand Rapids has a smaller but active technology employer base worth monitoring.
Are there state-specific considerations for staff software engineers seeking sponsorship in Michigan?
Michigan's concentration in automotive technology means many staff software engineer roles involve embedded systems, autonomous vehicle software, or manufacturing platforms, which can affect how employers classify positions for H-1B specialty occupation purposes. Ann Arbor's University of Michigan pipeline creates a steady supply of engineering talent that employers are familiar sponsoring. Prevailing wage requirements apply statewide, and employers must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before petitioning USCIS.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored staff software engineer jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
