- Security-minded, with experience implementing and maintaining security guardrails in engineering workflows
- Experience with workflow automation and strong debugging skills across distributed systems
- Familiarity with collaboration and workflow tooling such as Linear/Jira and Databricks
- Familiarity with AI governance practices and frameworks (e.g., ISO 42001) for managing AI systems responsibly
- Understanding of AI security risks and mitigations (e.g., model/data access controls, prompt injection, secure use of AI tooling)
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Security-minded by default, with a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risk
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability for systems end to end
- Clear communicator who collaborates effectively across engineering, security, and compliance
- Comfortable operating with autonomy in a fast-paced, high-growth environment

Which companies sponsor visas for staff software engineers in Washington?
Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Salesforce are among the most consistent sponsors of staff software engineer roles in Washington, particularly in the Seattle and Bellevue areas. Mid-size and growth-stage companies such as Zillow, Expedia, and T-Mobile also have active engineering hiring programs with demonstrated H-1B visa sponsorship histories according to Department of Labor LCA disclosure data.
Which visa types are most common for staff software engineer roles in Washington?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for staff software engineers in Washington, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related field. L-1B visas apply when an engineer transfers intracompany. Candidates with extraordinary ability may also pursue the O-1A. Australian citizens have access to the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and allows direct consular processing.
How to find staff software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Washington?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search staff software engineer roles in Washington without manually screening out employers who don't sponsor. The platform is built for international candidates and focuses on verified sponsorship-willing employers. Filtering by Washington state on Migrate Mate surfaces roles concentrated in Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond, where the highest density of sponsoring tech employers is located.
Which cities in Washington have the most staff software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Seattle and Bellevue account for the overwhelming majority of staff software engineer visa sponsorship activity in Washington. Redmond is significant due to Microsoft's headquarters campus. Kirkland has grown as a secondary tech hub, partly from Google's Kirkland office and various mid-size engineering companies. Outside the Puget Sound metro, sponsorship opportunities for staff-level engineering roles are considerably more limited.
Are there any Washington-specific considerations for staff software engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Washington has no state income tax, which affects how prevailing wage calculations translate to take-home pay compared to states like California. The Department of Labor sets prevailing wage levels for staff software engineer roles in the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett metropolitan area, and employers must certify their offered wage meets that threshold when filing a Labor Condition Application. Washington's concentration of large tech employers also means many have established immigration teams, which can streamline the sponsorship process.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored staff software engineer jobs in Washington?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
