Which visa types are most common for teaching roles in Michigan?
The H-1B visa is the most common path for K-12 and higher education teaching roles that require a relevant bachelor's degree or higher, qualifying teaching as a specialty occupation. The J-1 visa is also widely used, particularly through cultural exchange programs that place international teachers in Michigan public schools for one to three years. Some university instructors pursue O-1 visas based on extraordinary ability.
Which companies and institutions sponsor visas for teachers in Michigan?
The largest sponsors of teaching visas in Michigan include the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Wayne State University, and Oakland University. At the K-12 level, Detroit Public Schools Community District and Grand Rapids Public Schools have histories of sponsoring international educators, particularly for hard-to-fill specializations like special education, bilingual education, and secondary STEM subjects.
How to find teaching visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate filters teaching roles in Michigan specifically to those offering visa sponsorship, saving you from sorting through postings that won't support international candidates. You can search by district type, role, and location across the state. Michigan's urban districts and public universities post sponsorship-eligible openings regularly, and Migrate Mate surfaces those positions directly so you can apply without uncertainty about sponsorship eligibility.
Which cities in Michigan have the most teaching visa sponsorship jobs?
Detroit has the highest concentration of sponsored teaching positions, driven by the size of Detroit Public Schools Community District and several charter networks. Ann Arbor and East Lansing see strong demand through the University of Michigan and Michigan State University respectively, primarily for graduate instructors and faculty. Grand Rapids is a growing hub for K-12 sponsorship, particularly in bilingual and special education roles.
Are there state-specific considerations for internationally sponsored teachers in Michigan?
Michigan requires all K-12 teachers to hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate, which means international educators must have their foreign credentials evaluated and meet state licensure requirements before or alongside the visa process. Some J-1 exchange teachers are placed through programs that handle provisional certification. Higher education roles at universities generally do not require state licensure, making faculty and instructor positions more straightforward for international hires.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
