Description
The School of Ocean Futures (SOF) in the Rob Walton College of Global Futures (CGF) at Arizona State University invites applications for one full-time, benefit-eligible, academic year (9-month) Teaching Professor position in Ocean Futures with an anticipated start in Fall 2026.
This appointment is non-tenure track and will be made at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor, commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments. This appointment is for one academic year, and subsequent academic year renewals are contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the school.
The successful candidate will teach eight courses per academic year, typically four courses per semester, with most of this teaching occurring at the undergraduate level. The courses will be taught on the Tempe campus as well as in online modality. In addition to teaching, service on school or university committees is expected.
Applicants should have experience in college- or university-level teaching and student mentoring and be able to teach introductory-level Ocean Futures, marine biology, and ocean conservation courses to Ocean Futures majors, as well as to non-major students taking these classes to meet ASU’s General Education Sustainability Requirement.
Ideally, applicants will also have some research and/or professional experience in the field of Ocean Futures, for example oceanography, coastal planning, marine education, etc., as they will also be expected to co-teach the Ocean Futures Capstone course, in which undergraduate majors and master’s students work in teams on real problems with real partners.
Areas of interest or expertise within Ocean Futures are open, including (but not limited to) marine environmental science or marine ecology, marine environmental policy, marine energy systems or other infrastructure, fishing or marine food systems, coastal urbanism/planning, and blue economies.
Successful candidates will contribute heavily to the pedagogical mission of the SOF, including teaching general studies sustainability courses to students with a wide array of interests and majors. Therefore, candidates with a passion for clearly communicating ocean science to the general public and a capacity for dynamic and compelling pedagogy are highly encouraged to apply.
We especially seek candidates who have a compelling vision for teaching and student mentoring that aligns with the mission of the School of Ocean Futures and ASU’s Charter for a New American University.
The School of Ocean Futures is a dynamic and interdisciplinary community. Rooted in the ASU Charter, it is dedicated to shaping thriving ocean futures by advancing healthy coastal communities and marine systems through knowledge, partnerships, and innovation.
SOF is committed to continually increasing accessibility to Ocean Futures education and to supporting the wellbeing and resilience of the communities and individuals we serve now and into the future, including existing and potential students, faculty, staff, and collaborators. SOF has a career development pathway for teaching faculty and values teaching as an important contribution to achieving its core mission.

Search Teaching Jobs in ArizonaTeaching Jobs in Arizona: Frequently Asked Questions
Which visa types are most common for teaching roles in Arizona?
The H-1B is the most common visa for postsecondary and specialty teaching roles, particularly at universities and colleges like Arizona State University and University of Arizona. J-1 Exchange Visitor visas are widely used for K-12 teachers through cultural exchange programs. Some school districts also sponsor O-1 visas for educators with distinguished academic credentials or specialized expertise.
Which cities in Arizona have the most teaching sponsorship jobs?
Phoenix and its East Valley suburbs, including Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Scottsdale, have the highest concentration of teaching sponsorship opportunities, driven by large unified school districts and several major universities. Tucson is the second-largest hub, anchored by the University of Arizona and Tucson Unified School District. Flagstaff also sees activity through Northern Arizona University.
Which companies and institutions sponsor visas for teaching roles in Arizona?
Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University are among the most active visa sponsors for faculty and academic teaching staff. At the K-12 level, Tempe Union High School District, Mesa Unified School District, and Tucson Unified School District have sponsored teachers, particularly in high-need subject areas such as special education, mathematics, and science.
How to find teaching visa sponsorship jobs in Arizona?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters teaching roles in Arizona by visa sponsorship availability, saving time compared to manually reviewing hundreds of postings. You can browse open positions at K-12 districts, community colleges, and universities across the state, with filters for location and role type, all in one place designed for candidates who need employer sponsorship.
Are there any Arizona-specific considerations for teaching visa sponsorship candidates?
Arizona requires state teaching certification for K-12 public school roles, which international candidates must obtain separately from the visa process. This can affect hiring timelines, so districts typically sponsor educators who already hold or are eligible for an Arizona teaching certificate. For university faculty roles, a terminal degree in the relevant field is generally expected before a sponsoring institution will initiate an H-1B petition.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching jobs in Arizona?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
