Which employers in Washington DC sponsor visas for teaching roles?
DC Public Schools, KIPP DC, and Friendship Public Charter School are among the larger employers in DC that have sponsored work visas for teachers. Universities such as Georgetown University, American University, and George Washington University also sponsor international faculty and instructors. Sponsorship is most common for roles in special education, STEM subjects, and bilingual or dual-language instruction where qualified candidates are harder to find locally.
Which visa types are most common for teaching jobs in Washington DC?
The H-1B visa is the most common work visa for K-12 and postsecondary teaching roles in DC, as most teaching positions qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. The J-1 visa is also widely used, particularly through exchange visitor programs for teachers from countries with bilateral agreements. Some university roles may qualify for O-1 visas for individuals with extraordinary ability in their field.
How to find teaching visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers looking for visa sponsorship roles, including teaching positions in Washington DC. You can filter by location and role to see DC-based teaching jobs from employers who have a history of sponsoring visas. This saves significant time compared to manually researching which schools or universities are open to sponsoring international candidates.
Which areas of Washington DC have the most teaching sponsorship jobs?
Because Washington DC is a single city jurisdiction rather than a state with multiple metro areas, hiring is concentrated within the district itself. Wards 7 and 8 have a high density of public and charter schools with ongoing recruitment needs. The Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, and Tenleytown neighborhoods house major university campuses where international faculty sponsorship is most active for postsecondary teaching roles.
Are there specific considerations for international teachers pursuing visa sponsorship in Washington DC?
DC teaching positions at public and charter schools typically require licensure through the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, and international candidates should verify whether their credentials are eligible for equivalency review. For university roles, a master's degree or doctorate is generally expected. Charter schools in DC sometimes have more flexibility in hiring timelines than traditional public schools, which can affect how H-1B petition deadlines align with the academic calendar.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
