Job Description
The Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Engagement is a full-time professional staff member reporting to the Director of Campus Life. The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Engagement shall be, but not limited to, the following:
Responsibilities and Duties
- Provides assistance to the Director of Campus Life and provides assistance to university areas in support of engagement in co-curricular and curricular activities that create community, building opportunities, and enrich the student experience.
- The Student Leadership and Engagement staff serve, educate, and empower students through several different initiatives, organizations, and resources including, but not limited to: Student Organizations, Student Government Association, Leadership Programs, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Leadership Development, Homecoming, Intramural Activities, campus traditions, and several campus wide programs.
- The team will be responsible for the expansion, development, and administration of a strong fraternity and sorority community by working closely with chapters, advisors, national representatives, and four governing councils.
- The Assistant Director will also work with the Student/Campus Activity Board, a student led programming board and the premier programming organization at the University.
- Direct responsibilities of the Assistant Director will be contingent upon current need and individual strengths and skill set.
- Advise one to two governing councils – IFC and/or NPHC.
- Select, train, supervise, and provide professional development and coaching for work-study students and interns who support the campus community to also include fraternity and sorority life.
- Work with other staff members to oversee all programming sponsored by the Student/Campus Activity Board, Intramural Activities, Fraternity/Sorority Life, chapters, and councils ranging from Membership Recruitment, New Member Education, Greek Council Officer Transition and Training, Greek Excellence program, Greek Week, Leadership institutes/retreats, etc.
- Coordinate plan for growth and development of fraternity and sorority community including potential addition of chapters, programming, student development, etc.
- Assist with the development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan for promoting the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement, campus life, fraternity/sorority experience MVSU.
- Directly advise student organizations, activities, Student Union game room and Intramural Activities.
- Work with all aspects of event management for assigned OSLE sponsored activities, including artists’ contracts, vendor contracts, budget management, event logistics, promotion, and evaluation.
- Share responsibility to recruit, select, and train student leaders of the various committees and the Student/Campus Board.
- Provide direction for the planning and promotion of program activities that offer a variety of learning outcomes including but not limited to cognitive development, critical thinking, leadership, civic duty and engagement, service, interpersonal development, and engagement with MVSU and other students.
- Identify and coordinate professional development opportunities for student leaders and travel with them to off-site opportunities.
- Seek creative partnerships for providing excellent programming resources to students.
- Assist with maintaining department social media outlets, websites, etc.
- Assist with developing and maintaining a plan for marketing and promoting the student engagement experience through various mediums.
- Serve as a representative of the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership to departments within Academic and Student Affairs in addition to university committees.
- Coordinates Division comprehensive programming calendar.
- Night and weekend hours are required as related to specific programs and services.
- Adhere to all university policies and procedures.
- Any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Highly organized with knowledge of student programming, advising student organizations and event planning/management
- Knowledge of Microsoft word, excel spreadsheets and scheduling software and website management preferred
- The successful candidate will be a team-player, and will have a commitment to the goals of OSLE and specifically the mission of Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU)
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs administration, college student personnel, or related field from an accredited institution and four years of professional experience in student activities and programming.
An equivalent combination of education or experience may be considered.
