Which companies sponsor visas for software developers in Montana?
Montana has a smaller but active set of sponsoring employers. Technology firms, healthcare organizations such as Billings Clinic and SCL Health, and companies in the agribusiness technology space have filed H-1B visa Labor Condition Applications for software developer roles. Missoula-based RightNow Technologies (now Oracle) established a notable tech employer presence in the state, and several remote-friendly software companies headquartered here also sponsor visas.
Which visa types are most common for software developer roles in Montana?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for software developers in Montana, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may also pursue TN visa status under USMCA. Australians may qualify for the E-3 visa. O-1 visas are an option for developers with an exceptional record of achievement.
How to find software developer visa sponsorship jobs in Montana?
Migrate Mate filters software developer jobs specifically by visa sponsorship willingness, which saves time compared to applying broadly and asking about sponsorship after the fact. Because Montana's tech market is smaller, searching by role and state on Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have an active history of sponsoring international candidates for software developer positions, helping you focus applications on realistic opportunities rather than companies unlikely to sponsor.
Which cities in Montana have the most software developer sponsorship jobs?
Bozeman leads Montana's software developer hiring, driven by rapid population growth, a startup ecosystem, and proximity to Montana State University's computer science program. Missoula follows, with a mix of technology companies and remote-first employers. Billings, as the state's largest city, offers opportunities in healthcare IT and enterprise software. Helena, the state capital, has state government IT roles, though sponsorship is rare in the public sector.
Are there state-specific considerations for software developers pursuing visa sponsorship in Montana?
Montana's prevailing wage requirements for H-1B positions are determined by the Department of Labor using local wage data, which can differ significantly from national figures given the state's lower cost of living relative to coastal markets. Montana State University in Bozeman and the University of Montana in Missoula produce a pipeline of computer science graduates, meaning local competition for entry-level roles exists. Employers in Montana also tend to be smaller companies, so legal and HR capacity to manage sponsorship varies.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software developer jobs in Montana?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
