The New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy (NMLEA) is the cornerstone of public safety training in the state. As the central hub for certifying and developing law enforcement officers and telecommunicators, NMLEA sets the standard for excellence, accountability, and service. Through a statewide network of nine satellite academies and a robust curriculum, staff prepare the next generation of public safety professionals to serve with integrity, skill, and resilience.
The work at the Academy is grounded in the New Mexico Law Enforcement Training Act, but the mission goes far beyond compliance. The NMLEA is building a culture of continuous learning, ethical leadership, and operational readiness - powered by the Acadis® software suite, which enables staff to track, audit, and elevate training outcomes across every jurisdiction in New Mexico.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position provides centralized, senior-level operational management for the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy (NMLEA), the Standards and Training Council (STC), and limited support to the Law Enforcement Certification Board (LECB). It oversees multiple Academy facilities; a diverse fleet of staff, student, and driving track vehicles; and critical logistical and inventory systems that ensure continuity, compliance, and operational readiness across all Academy programs.
The role functions as the operational backbone of the Academy, supporting statutory mandates, statewide training delivery, and the safe, efficient, and compliant use of all Academy resources.
FACILITIES, RANGE and REALITY-BASED TRAINING FACILITY MANAGEMENT - 45%
- Provides senior-level oversight of all NMLEA facilities including classrooms, auditorium, gymnasium, cafeteria kitchen, dormitories, and staff offices.
- Maintains key inventory and access to facilities.
- Ensures equipment, fixtures, and furnishings are functional and compliant.
- Ensures dormitory furnishings and linens are maintained and replaced as needed.
- Manages kitchen permitting and inspections.
- Monitors food-service contractor performance and service delivery.
- Ensures all facilities, rooms and equipment are professionally steam-cleaned after completion of each BPOT class, and as needed during the year.
- Coordinates all facility rentals.
- Maintains the firing range and driving track scheduling, maintenance, and repairs.
- Oversees current Reality Based Training equipment functionality and certification.
- Enhances facility, staff, and student safety responsibilities.
- Collaborates with the DPS General Services Director on the Emergency Preparedness Plan.
- Oversees development of the new Reality Based Training facility in coordination with NMGSD and DPS General Services.
FLEET MANAGEMENT and VEHICLE LOGISTICS - 25%
- Manages the Academy's fleet of staff vehicles, student vans, and driving track cars.
- Serves as the primary point of contact with NMSP Fleet for lifecycle replacement, scheduled maintenance, and repairs.
- Maintains vehicle keys and fuel card inventories.
- Ensures authorized drivers maintain required licenses and defensive driving certification.
- Maintains vehicle checkout logs, vehicle usage, and incident/accident reporting.
QUARTERMASTER, INVENTORY and SUPPLY OPERATIONS - 20%
- Oversees all quartermaster functions to include ammunition, student laptops, cadet clothing and supplies, and general Academy inventories.
- Manages specialized inventories such as breathalyzers and Wet Lab materials, and ensures supply tracking, distribution, and accountability.
- Coordinates internal and external audits and maintains accurate and compliant inventory systems.
- Coordinates the recycling of spent brass shell casings at the Range.
TOURNIQUET TRAINING PROGRAM - 10%
- Purchases tourniquet kits and manages inventory for distribution.
- Coordinates with the Compliance Section to verify that requesting law enforcement agencies are compliant with the training requirements per statute.
- Distributes tourniquet kits to eligible law enforcement agencies throughout the state and maintains all records.
CUSTOMERS
Work is performed for the New Mexico Department of Public Safety employees, local law enforcement agencies, dispatch centers, satellite law enforcement academies, and executive and legislative agencies throughout the state.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of professional level experience with a tactical impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's Licenses, a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of employment within six (6) months of date of hire. Continued employment is subject to a National fingerprint-based records check within 30 days of assignment and contingent upon remaining felony-free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information System Security Policy.
Local, in-state and out-of-state travel may be required. Overtime may be required to meet deadlines, peak performance periods, time-sensitive information requests, and other projects.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a fast-paced law enforcement office setting with exposure to armed law enforcement personnel and confidential information. Extensive use of desktop/laptop computer with multiple visual/video display terminals (VDT). Extensive use of agency-issued cell phone. Ability to operate multipurpose copier/scanner/fax machines. Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
