Why does the job exist?
This position serves as a Wetlands Program Project Officer and works interactively with other Bureau staff, stakeholders (e.g., regulated community, non-governmental organizations, etc.), state and federal agencies, and the public to protect, inventory, monitor, restore, and improve the State's wetland water resources and water quality for the benefit of all New Mexicans.

- Manages and implements wetlands projects involving GIS mapping, wetlands action plan development, wetlands monitoring, and restoration
- Develops grant proposals, agreements, contracts and procurements for new wetlands projects
- Manages and implements federal wetlands grants, overseeing full project implementation, deliverables, and financial tracking
- Participates in and organizes wetlands monitoring to collect and manage wetlands data (hydrology, plant ID, soil sampling) and prepare technical reports
- Collaborates with stakeholders to conduct outreach and education on wetlands and host technical committee meetings and Wetlands Roundtables

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture Science, Hydrology, Geology, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Watershed Management, Physics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Forestry/Forest Science, Conservation Science, Wildlife Science, Emergency Management, or Engineering and four (4) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. Work is primarily in an office setting with field work and off-site presentations required. In-state travel is required. Deadlines sometimes result in longer workdays. This position requires working in or around water and wetlands in all weather conditions and occasionally hiking through rough country to rugged sites to perform wetland project monitoring and restoration. Field locations are sometimes remote, out of cell phone range. Ability to drive larger field vehicles (e.g., Suburban, Expedition) required. Camping at remote sites may be required.
