Summary Description of Position
The individual will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to advance into a sales role within the company. They will learn company processes and procedures used throughout the organization including an understanding of the Quality, Dispatching, Sales, and Management departments. Upon successful completion of the Sales Trainee program the individual will transition into a role that best suits their talents, interests, and the needs of the organization. Other duties may be assigned.
This position will rotate through temporary assignments in the organization in order to obtain a complete picture of day-to-day duties and responsibilities of many departments and the importance of teamwork within our Company.
Day-to-day duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to; learning relationship development, sales skills, product knowledge, dispatch management, company computer systems, processes and procedures.
As a Sales Trainee for the company this position is learning how to develop skills for building and servicing a customer base through sales, service, and collection of receivables to maximize profits on the production and sales of construction aggregates. Also learning how to resolve customer issues relating to materials or trucking to ensure customer satisfaction and delivery of high quality products. And learning how to projects sales and analyze trends to assist in the annual budget process.
Education, Experience, Skills Required
Education:
- A Bachelor’s degree is required. A major in marketing or business-related field may be helpful but not essential.

- Must be a self starter.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn.
- Conduct self in the presence of customers so as to present a professional image of Vulcan Materials Company.
- Must be an effective communicator and have the ability to work with a diverse group of people both externally and internally.
- Knowledge and understanding of basic sales and marketing theory and practices.
- Knowledge of basic financial practices and economics of the business.
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal relationship skills.
- Must possess time management skills that allow for multiple changes to planned days.
- Ability to use computerized equipment and technology and other software packages relevant to the position.
Essential Functions
- Assists in gathering information to keep the sales force well informed of market conditions.
- Enters data on regular basis pertaining to calls, quotes, etc., as well as preparing regular reports as required by multiple department leadership.
- Communicates with operations and transportation services to ensure availability of products and proper scheduling of delivery.
- Communicates with Quality Control when necessary to assess and handle customer concerns in a timely manner.
- Assists with developing sales and market projections, and monitoring selling and pricing structure of materials on a daily basis to ensure maximum profits.
- Assists with coordination of equipment usage and plant schedules with operations personnel.
- Assists with servicing jobs on site to ensure efficient delivery of materials.
- May participate in budget preparation, month-end reporting and daily review of billing process.
- Actively participates in legislative efforts and in the area’s community outreach and educational programs. Activities will include industry trade associations, local Chamber of Commerce, area non-profit, and local as well as state government commitments.

Other Requirements
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Must have the ability to travel locally on a regular basis and periodic overnight travel as required.
- Work environment will be both indoors in an office and outside in the quarry or plant. Outside setting will expose employee to changes in temperature/humidity and will require walking on uneven surfaces, walking/climbing steep inclines.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
