About this Role
Wells Fargo is seeking a Principal DevOps Engineer to accelerate how Consumer Technology builds, ships, and operates software at enterprise scale. You'll be a hands-on engineer who pairs deep software engineering skill with platform thinking—designing APIs, applications, playbooks, and providers that power our Internal Developer Platform and reliability toolchain. Your focus will span Platform Engineering (infrastructure as code, developer portals, service templates, GitOps) and Reliability Engineering (SLOs/error budgets, resilient architectures, observability) with room to lean into your strength area.
In this role, you will:
- Design and build platform capabilities as products: APIs, controllers, operators, and Infrastructure as Code providers that enable self-service infrastructure, secure defaults, and golden paths.
- Advance reliability engineering across SDLC: define SLOs/error budgets, design for graceful degradation and resiliency, and embed observability through standardized libraries and templates.
- Lead architecture and strategy and author RFCs/tech designs, drive decisions on platform boundaries, SLAs, tenancy, multi-region readiness, and dependency risk.
- Elevate developer experience: collaborate with our Chief Development Office to extend and integrate developer portals with catalogs, scorecards, templates, and paved-road CI/CD that make the right path the easy path.
- Implement modern delivery: GitOps workflows, artifact/image pipelines, immutable infrastructure patterns, and progressive delivery practices.
- Collaborate across the enterprise: influence standards, align with security/compliance guardrails, and partner with SRE, Cloud, and App teams to remove friction and deliver measurable reliability and time-to-value gains.
Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
- 5+ years writing production code for platforms, services, or automation.
- 5+ years of experience with capacity management, performance tuning, or performance optimization
- 3+ years experience with Infrastructure as Code at scale
- 3+ years of experience with cloud and/or hybrid cloud including hands-on Kubernetes/OpenShift: packaging, platform abstractions, cluster-level automation, admission controls, and secure multi-tenancy patterns.
- 3+ years experience with GitOps delivery CI/CD design, environment promotion strategies, and policy-as-code integration.
- 3+ years experience with Observability fundamentals: metrics, logs, tracing, and alerting with SLOs and error budgets.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience extending developer portals and building service templates
- Experience with Crossplane and custom providers/operators is highly valued.
- Building secure, compliant platforms: guardrails, golden images, image supply chains and runtime controls.
- Distributed systems and reliability patterns experience
- Experience with service mesh and API management patterns.
- Experience contributing to inner source codebases or shared engineering libraries
- Financial-services or other regulated-enterprise experience.

- Ability to travel up to 20% for key events and teamwork as needed.
- This position offers a hybrid work schedule

Which companies sponsor visas for DevOps engineers in Ohio?
Financial services firms are among the most active H-1B sponsors for DevOps roles in Ohio. Nationwide Insurance, JPMorgan Chase, and Huntington Bancshares in Columbus have consistent records of sponsoring DevOps engineers. In Cleveland, healthcare technology companies and consulting firms such as Deloitte and Accenture also file H-1B petitions for infrastructure and DevOps positions regularly.
Which visa types are most common for DevOps roles in Ohio?
The H-1B is the most common visa for DevOps engineers in Ohio, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Candidates already holding L-1B intracompany transferee status or TN visas (for Canadian and Mexican nationals) may also find DevOps roles accessible without the H-1B lottery process.
Which cities in Ohio have the most DevOps sponsorship jobs?
Columbus is Ohio's primary hub for DevOps sponsorship activity, driven by its concentration of financial services, insurance, and retail technology employers. Cleveland follows, with healthcare IT and consulting firms generating consistent demand. Cincinnati has a smaller but active market, particularly in consumer goods technology and logistics, where companies like Procter and Gamble maintain engineering operations.
How to find devops visa sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to browse DevOps roles in Ohio without sorting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. You can narrow results by location and role type to focus on Columbus, Cleveland, or Cincinnati employers actively hiring DevOps engineers with H-1B or other work visa support.
Are there state-specific considerations for DevOps sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Ohio's prevailing wage requirements for H-1B DevOps roles are set at the federal level through Department of Labor wage determinations, which vary by metropolitan area. Columbus and Cleveland wages are benchmarked separately, so an H-1B petition filed for a Columbus-based role must meet the Columbus-area prevailing wage. Ohio also has several university research computing programs that can create pathways into sponsored DevOps positions through OPT or CPT.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored devops jobs in Ohio?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
