INTRODUCTION
We are seeking a Systems Software Engineer to support the design, development, and validation of complex hardware test and control systems. This role spans software development, hardware/software co-design, and test automation, with responsibility for building reliable, maintainable code that interfaces directly with physical systems, sensors, and instrumentation.
The ideal candidate is comfortable writing production-quality code, working with version-controlled repositories, participating in regression testing activities, and collaborating closely with hardware, firmware, and systems engineering teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, develop, and maintain software applications that interface with hardware systems, sensors, and external instruments
- Write, debug, and refactor code in C# and related languages to support test control, data acquisition, logging, and visualization
- Collaborate with hardware engineers on hardware/software co-design, including defining interfaces, timing, control logic, and system behavior
- Develop and maintain automated test frameworks and participate in regression testing to ensure software reliability across releases
- Use code repositories (e.g., Git-based systems) for source control, code reviews, branching, and release management
- Diagnose and resolve issues that span software, firmware, and hardware boundaries
- Contribute to system-level documentation, design reviews, and technical knowledge sharing
- Support system bring-up, integration, and troubleshooting in lab environments
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong familiarity with the C# programming language, including object-oriented design and debugging
- Demonstrated ability to code beyond scripting—writing maintainable, production-quality software
- Experience working with code repositories (e.g., Git), including commits, branches, merges, and code reviews
- Familiarity with regression testing concepts, automated test execution, and test result analysis
- Experience or strong interest in hardware/software co-design and systems that integrate real-world hardware
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience developing software for test systems, lab automation, or hardware control environments
- Familiarity with communication interfaces such as USB, Ethernet, serial, or instrument control APIs
- Exposure to data logging, visualization, and post-processing workflows
- Experience working in cross-disciplinary teams (hardware, firmware, software, systems engineering)
- Comfortable working in lab settings with physical hardware
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE RECOMMENDED
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience)
- Typically has 4-7 years of work experience, preferably in applications engineering, programming, or a related field or Masters degree or higher with 3-5 years of work experience.

Which companies in Oregon sponsor visas for backend software engineers?
Intel is one of Oregon's largest H-1B visa sponsors for backend engineering roles, particularly at its Hillsboro campus. Salesforce, Nike's technology division, and Daimler Trucks North America also have consistent sponsorship track records in the Portland metro. A number of smaller SaaS and fintech companies in Oregon have sponsored backend engineers, though sponsorship practices vary by company size and hiring volume.
What visa types are most common for backend software engineers in Oregon?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for backend software engineers in Oregon, as backend engineering roles generally qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Some employers also sponsor the O-1A for engineers with exceptional achievements. Candidates already on F-1 OPT or STEM OPT extension are often an easier near-term hire for Oregon employers before H-1B transfer or sponsorship.
Which cities in Oregon have the most backend software engineer visa sponsorship jobs?
Portland accounts for the large majority of backend software engineer sponsorship activity in Oregon, driven by its concentration of tech employers, corporate headquarters, and startup activity. Hillsboro, directly west of Portland, is significant specifically because of Intel's large engineering operations there. Beaverton also sees activity from Nike's technology teams. Eugene and Corvallis have smaller tech footprints but some university-adjacent employer activity.
How to find backend software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Oregon?
Migrate Mate filters backend software engineer jobs specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify Oregon-based employers who are open to sponsoring. Because sponsorship willingness is rarely stated clearly in standard job postings, using Migrate Mate to surface verified sponsoring employers in Oregon saves significant time compared to cold-applying and asking about sponsorship later in the process.
Are there any Oregon-specific considerations for backend software engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Oregon does not have state-level visa programs, so federal rules apply uniformly. One practical consideration is that Oregon's tech hiring is concentrated in the Portland-Hillsboro corridor, so targeting that region maximizes sponsorship options. Oregon State University and the University of Oregon produce backend engineering graduates who sometimes enter the local market on OPT, which may affect how some smaller employers think about sponsorship timelines and commitment.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored backend software engineer jobs in Oregon?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
