Which companies sponsor visas for backend software engineers in Illinois?
Chicago-based employers with consistent H-1B visa sponsorship records for backend engineers include Morningstar, Groupon, Uptake, Outcome Health, and large financial institutions like Northern Trust and CME Group. Enterprise technology firms such as Tempus and Cleversafe (now part of IBM) also appear in Department of Labor disclosure data. Consulting firms with Chicago offices, including Accenture and Infosys, file a significant share of H-1B petitions for backend engineering roles in the state.
Which visa types are most common for backend software engineer roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is by far the most common visa for backend software engineers in Illinois, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Some employers also use the L-1B for intracompany transfers of engineers with specialized knowledge. Canadian and Mexican nationals in backend roles may pursue TN visa status under the USMCA, which does not require lottery selection.
How to find backend software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search for backend software engineer roles in Illinois without manually screening out employers who don't sponsor. The platform focuses on international candidates, which means the Illinois listings are drawn from employers already open to sponsoring H-1B and other work visas for backend engineering positions, including roles in Chicago's fintech and healthcare technology sectors.
Which cities in Illinois have the most backend software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of backend software engineer visa sponsorship opportunities in Illinois. The River North, Fulton Market, and Loop neighborhoods host the densest concentration of tech employers. Naperville and Schaumburg in the Chicago suburbs also have backend engineering hiring, particularly from enterprise software and telecommunications companies. Outside the Chicago metro area, sponsorship opportunities for backend roles are considerably less frequent.
Are there state-specific factors that affect backend software engineer sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois employers sponsoring H-1B workers must comply with Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements, which are benchmarked to the Chicago metropolitan statistical area for roles based in the city. Illinois has a notable pipeline of engineering talent through the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, which means some employers actively recruit international graduates from UIUC's computer science program, often transitioning candidates from OPT to H-1B sponsorship within their first year of employment.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored backend software engineer jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
