Which companies sponsor visas for backend software engineers in Virginia?
Northern Virginia's federal contracting and tech ecosystem produces some of the highest concentrations of sponsoring employers in the country. Companies like Amazon Web Services, Capital One, Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, General Dynamics IT, and Perspecta regularly file H-1B visa petitions for backend engineers. Consulting firms including Deloitte and Accenture, which have large Virginia offices, also sponsor backend roles with some regularity.
Which visa types are most common for backend software engineer roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is the most common visa for backend software engineers in Virginia, given that the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related field. L-1B visas appear among multinational firms transferring engineers to Northern Virginia offices. Australians may also find E-3 visa sponsorship from Virginia employers familiar with that category.
Which cities in Virginia have the most backend software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia dominates, particularly the Dulles Technology Corridor spanning Reston, Herndon, McLean, and Tysons. Arlington and Alexandria, given their proximity to federal agencies and Pentagon contractors, also generate significant backend engineering demand. Richmond has a growing financial technology sector anchored by Capital One's headquarters. Outside these hubs, backend sponsorship opportunities thin out considerably.
How to find backend software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse backend software engineer roles in Virginia without sorting through positions that don't sponsor. Given Virginia's heavy federal contracting presence, filtering by employer type and clearance requirements on Migrate Mate helps narrow results to roles that match your background. Setting up alerts for Northern Virginia specifically is worth doing, as that corridor moves quickly.
Are there any Virginia-specific considerations for backend software engineers pursuing sponsorship?
Virginia's large federal contracting sector means many backend roles require security clearances, which generally cannot be obtained without permanent residency or citizenship, effectively excluding candidates on temporary work visas from a meaningful portion of the market. University pipelines from Virginia Tech, George Mason, and the University of Virginia feed tech talent into the region, which means competition for sponsored roles at accessible employers can be high.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored backend software engineer jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
