Which companies sponsor visas for backend software engineers in North Carolina?
Several large North Carolina employers have consistent H-1B sponsorship records for backend software engineering roles. These include Cisco and IBM in Research Triangle Park, Red Hat (now part of IBM) in Durham, SAS Institute in Cary, and Fidelity Investments in Durham and Raleigh. Bank of America and Ally Financial in Charlotte also sponsor backend engineers, particularly in financial technology and cloud infrastructure teams.
Which visa types are most common for backend software engineers in North Carolina?
The H-1B is the most common visa for backend software engineers in North Carolina, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Some employers also sponsor L-1B visas for intracompany transfers. Canadian and Mexican nationals in backend roles may qualify for the TN visa under the NAFTA/USMCA "Computer Systems Analyst" or "Engineer" categories, depending on the role's specific duties.
Which cities in North Carolina have the most backend software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Raleigh and Durham, anchored by Research Triangle Park, account for the largest share of backend software engineering sponsorship activity in North Carolina. Cary, home to SAS Institute, is also a significant hub. Charlotte is the second major center, driven by its banking and fintech sector. Chapel Hill sees some activity through university-affiliated tech employers. The Research Triangle corridor overall offers the widest concentration of sponsoring employers in the state.
How to find backend software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in North Carolina?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship, and you can filter directly for backend software engineer roles in North Carolina. This lets you focus on employers with documented sponsorship activity rather than applying broadly and discovering too late that a company won't sponsor. Checking employer H-1B disclosure data through the Department of Labor's OFLC portal can also help you verify a company's sponsorship history before applying.
Are there state-specific factors backend software engineers should know before targeting North Carolina roles?
North Carolina's Research Triangle benefits from strong university pipelines through NC State, Duke, and UNC Chapel Hill, which means employers in the region are familiar with international hiring and OPT-to-H-1B transitions. The state has a relatively lower cost of living compared to coastal tech hubs, which can affect prevailing wage calculations under the Department of Labor's standards. Backend engineers with cloud, distributed systems, or open-source backgrounds tend to align well with the region's dominant employers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored backend software engineer jobs in North Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
