Which employers in Pennsylvania sponsor visas for teaching roles?
Large public school districts, including the School District of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Public Schools, are among the more active sponsors, as are universities like Penn State, Temple University, and the University of Pennsylvania for postsecondary teaching positions. Private and charter schools also sponsor, though their capacity and frequency vary considerably by institution size and budget.
Which visa types are most commonly used for teaching jobs in Pennsylvania?
The H-1B is the most common visa for postsecondary and specialty K-12 teaching roles that qualify as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree in a specific field. The J-1 Exchange Visitor visa, particularly through teacher exchange programs, is widely used for K-12 classroom teachers. Some university faculty positions are also sponsored under the O-1 for individuals with extraordinary ability in their field.
How to find teaching visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to search for teaching roles in Pennsylvania without sifting through postings that offer no immigration support. You can narrow results by city, school level, or subject area. Because sponsorship willingness isn't always stated upfront in job descriptions, Migrate Mate's curated listings save significant time for international educators.
Which cities in Pennsylvania have the most teaching visa sponsorship jobs?
Philadelphia generates the highest volume of teaching sponsorship opportunities, driven by its large public school district, several research universities, and a concentration of private institutions. Pittsburgh follows, supported by Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Public Schools. State College, home to Penn State's main campus, also produces consistent openings for postsecondary and research-adjacent teaching roles.
Are there any Pennsylvania-specific considerations for international teachers seeking visa sponsorship?
Pennsylvania requires state teaching certification for K-12 public school positions, which international candidates must obtain in addition to securing visa sponsorship. Educators in STEM subjects and special education face lower credential barriers because demand consistently outpaces supply, making districts more willing to support the sponsorship process. Postsecondary roles at Pennsylvania's research universities typically have more established immigration infrastructure and experience processing H-1B petitions than smaller K-12 employers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching jobs in Pennsylvania?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
