Nordson EFD, a global leader in Engineered Fluid Dispensing, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we are looking for candidates who share that same commitment.
Summary of the role
As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, where your ideas and contributions will be valued and respected.
Mechanical Engineer II – EFD Consumables Development
Nordson EFD is seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer II to join the Product Design Team, with a primary focus on the development and support of high-volume injection-molded consumable products used in precision fluid dispensing for advanced manufacturing and medical fluid handling applications.
In this role, you will contribute to the design, testing, qualification, and continuous improvement of plastic consumable products throughout the product lifecycle. Working closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, you will apply strong engineering fundamentals and structured problem-solving techniques to deliver reliable, manufacturable, and high-quality products.
How YOU Will Make an Impact
- Support the development of high-volume injection-molded plastic consumable products from concept through production release.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and external suppliers to execute product development and sustaining engineering activities.
- Participate in DFMEA, PFMEA, and risk assessment activities to identify, document, and help mitigate product and process risks.
- Work with external molders and tooling suppliers to support design optimization for manufacturability, quality, cost, and production efficiency.
- Apply structured problem-solving techniques, including root cause analysis and basic DOE methodologies, to investigate and resolve design, manufacturing, and field performance issues.
- Assist in polymer material selection and validation activities, considering performance requirements, chemical compatibility, manufacturability, and reliability.
- Develop and maintain 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks, including appropriate GD&T and manufacturing specifications.
- Perform engineering analyses such as tolerance stack-ups and interpretation of mold flow and simulation results to support design decisions.
- Plan and execute design verification and validation testing, analyze results, document findings, and recommend design improvements.
- Support existing consumable product lines by addressing quality issues, implementing product enhancements, supporting supplier changes, and contributing to cost-reduction initiatives.
- Contribute to the design and integration of electro-mechanical subsystems and assemblies as needed.
- Create and maintain engineering documentation including drawings, specifications, test protocols, reports, engineering change orders, and work instructions.
Qualifications to Be Successful
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
- 3–5 years of mechanical product development experience, preferably with injection-molded plastic components or high-volume manufactured products.
- Working knowledge of plastic part design principles, polymer materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience participating in product development projects from concept through production release.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and creation of detailed engineering drawings with GD&T.
- Familiarity with DFMEA, design controls, engineering change processes, and structured product development practices.
- Experience applying structured problem-solving techniques and root cause analysis to technical challenges.
- Basic understanding of tolerance analysis, FEA, mold flow analysis, or other engineering simulation tools.
- Ability to create clear engineering documentation including test plans, reports, drawings, specifications, and change orders.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
- Experience in medical devices, fluid handling products, consumables, or other regulated manufacturing environments is a plus.

Which manufacturing companies sponsor F-1 OPT visas in Rhode Island?
Rhode Island manufacturers with histories of sponsoring international workers include Raytheon Technologies in North Kingstown, Toray Plastics America in North Kingstown, and Taco Comfort Solutions in Cranston. Smaller precision manufacturers and defense subcontractors across the Blackstone Valley corridor have also sponsored F-1 OPT candidates, particularly for engineering and quality assurance roles where specialized technical degrees are required.
Which cities in Rhode Island have the most manufacturing F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Providence and North Kingstown account for the largest share of manufacturing F-1 OPT positions in Rhode Island. North Kingstown hosts major defense and materials manufacturing employers, while Providence has a broader industrial base. Woonsocket, Cranston, and the Blackstone Valley corridor are secondary clusters worth targeting, particularly for roles in plastics, textiles, and precision components manufacturing.
What types of manufacturing roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship?
Roles that regularly qualify for F-1 OPT in manufacturing include process engineering, mechanical engineering, quality engineering, industrial engineering, materials science, and manufacturing operations. The position must represent practical training directly related to your degree field. General production or assembly roles rarely meet this standard, whereas technical positions requiring a relevant bachelor's or master's degree typically do qualify for OPT authorization.
How do I find manufacturing F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Rhode Island?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT job seekers and filters manufacturing roles in Rhode Island by visa sponsorship availability, saving you from manually screening hundreds of listings. You can browse verified OPT-eligible positions across sectors like advanced manufacturing, defense, and industrial engineering in Rhode Island directly on Migrate Mate, where employer sponsorship information is surfaced alongside each role.
Are there state-specific or industry-specific considerations for F-1 OPT in Rhode Island manufacturing?
Rhode Island's manufacturing base is heavily tied to defense contracting, and some positions at companies like Raytheon may require security clearances that F-1 OPT holders are generally ineligible to obtain, narrowing available roles. STEM OPT extension eligibility is relevant here since many engineering and materials science positions qualify, providing a 24-month extension beyond the standard 12 months for graduates in qualifying STEM degree programs.
