Which aerospace and defense companies sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas in South Carolina?
Boeing is the state's largest aerospace employer and has a documented history of hiring international talent through OPT at its North Charleston 787 Dreamliner production facility. Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Textron Aviation-affiliated suppliers operating in the Upstate and Lowcountry regions also appear in DOL labor condition application filings for STEM-related roles. Smaller Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers in the South Carolina Aerospace Alliance network have sponsored OPT workers in engineering and quality functions as well.
Which cities in South Carolina have the most aerospace and defense F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
Charleston and North Charleston lead the state for aerospace sponsorship volume, driven primarily by Boeing's final assembly operations and its supporting supplier ecosystem. Greenville and Spartanburg in the Upstate region host defense-adjacent advanced manufacturing firms with STEM OPT hiring activity. Columbia sees some demand through government contractor offices tied to Fort Jackson and state agency contracts. For roles requiring active security clearance eligibility, North Charleston and the greater Charleston metro offer the broadest concentration of opportunities.
What types of aerospace and defense roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
Roles that pair a STEM-designated degree with a direct technical function qualify most readily. In South Carolina's aerospace sector that typically includes manufacturing engineering, structural analysis, avionics systems engineering, quality assurance engineering, supply chain and logistics engineering, and aerospace systems integration. Software engineering roles embedded within aerospace programs also qualify when the employer's STEM degree classification maps to a STEM classification. General management or non-technical administrative roles within an aerospace company do not qualify for STEM OPT, even if the employer is in the industry.
How do I find aerospace and defense F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs in South Carolina?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa type and industry, so you can search for F-1 STEM OPT-eligible roles in South Carolina's aerospace and defense sector without manually screening each posting. Because the platform surfaces employer DOL filing history, you can identify which companies have a verifiable track record of sponsoring OPT workers in technical roles rather than relying on unconfirmed claims in job descriptions. Start by filtering for aerospace and defense positions in the Charleston and Greenville metro areas.
Are there any state-specific or industry-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT in South Carolina's aerospace sector?
A significant portion of aerospace and defense work in South Carolina involves programs with federal government contracts, some of which carry security clearance requirements. F-1 students on OPT are generally not eligible for most U.S. security clearances, which can limit access to certain classified programs at facilities like those supporting naval operations near Charleston. Applicants should confirm with the employer whether a specific role requires clearance eligibility before applying. Roles at Boeing's commercial 787 line and non-classified supplier positions typically do not carry this restriction.
