Which companies sponsor visas for software systems engineers in South Carolina?
Defense and government contractors are among the most active sponsors for software systems engineers in South Carolina, including Booz Allen Hamilton, SAIC, and Leidos, which maintain significant operations in the Columbia area. Financial technology companies in Charlotte's orbit that extend into South Carolina, along with manufacturing firms in Greenville needing embedded or industrial software engineers, also appear in H-1B disclosure data as visa sponsors for this role category.
Which visa types are most common for software systems engineer roles in South Carolina?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for software systems engineers in South Carolina, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Nationals from Australia may also be eligible for the E-3 visa, and Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under the TN visa category, which covers engineers under USMCA provisions.
Which cities in South Carolina have the most software systems engineer sponsorship jobs?
Columbia sees the highest concentration of software systems engineer sponsorship activity, driven largely by defense contractors and state government IT projects near Fort Jackson and Shaw Air Force Base. Charleston has an emerging technology and cybersecurity cluster, while Greenville attracts engineering talent tied to advanced manufacturing and automotive suppliers. Smaller pockets of opportunity exist in Greenwood and Anderson County within the Upstate region.
How to find software systems engineer visa sponsorship jobs in South Carolina?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters software systems engineer roles in South Carolina by visa sponsorship willingness, saving you from manually screening hundreds of postings. You can search by city, filter by employer type, and identify companies with a documented history of H-1B or other visa filings for systems engineering positions in the state. Start on Migrate Mate to narrow your search to employers already set up to sponsor.
Are there any state-specific factors that affect software systems engineer visa sponsorship in South Carolina?
A notable consideration in South Carolina is that a significant share of software systems engineering roles are tied to defense and government contracts, which often require security clearances. Active clearances or clearance eligibility can complicate visa sponsorship, since many clearance-required positions are restricted to U.S. citizens. International engineers should focus on commercial software, fintech, and advanced manufacturing employers in the state, where sponsorship for systems engineering roles is more straightforward.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software systems engineer jobs in South Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
