Description
Worldwide Mission Critical is a global owner’s representation and project management company dedicated to the mission-critical industry, helping companies deliver their data centers on time and under budget. Founded on the principle that the right team of experienced data center professionals will deliver great projects, our ability to provide oversight for all aspects of a project sets us apart.
Summary
As a Design team Architectural Lead, you will oversee the design and delivery of complex building projects within the data center sector, leading multiple design disciplines such as Civil, Structural, Landscape, and Architecture (CSLA). You will ensure the integration of functional, operational, and sustainable solutions, managing the design process from initial concept through to project completion. This role requires strong collaboration with cross-functional teams, external partners, and consultants to ensure high-quality, on-time, and on-budget delivery of innovative data center solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- You will guide projects through every stage—from conceptual planning and schematic design to the preparation of construction documents, administration, and final turnover—acting as the lead for CSLA disciplines.
- You will collaborate with internal teams (including Development, Procurement, Construction, and Operations) and external stakeholders (such as AEoRs, contractors, and regulatory bodies) to resolve challenges, mitigate risks, and ensure timely and cost-effective project delivery with a focus on safety, functionality, and sustainability.
- You will research and develop innovative architectural solutions and emerging design trends to enhance the scalability, sustainability, and operational efficiency of data center facilities.
- You will oversee the issuance of RFPs, evaluate vendor proposals, manage contract execution, and ensure that all design-related documentation (such as change proposals, invoices, submittals, and reports) is in line with project requirements.
- You will ensure that AEoR teams meet project milestones and quality standards, offering constructive feedback and fostering alignment across construction, operations, and other project stakeholders during performance evaluations.
- You will actively work with project teams to identify and address potential risks, proactively adjusting project schedules as needed to meet evolving business demands.
- You will participate in hands-on testing, mock-up reviews, and commissioning activities to ensure systems are installed and tested to the highest standards.
- You will serve as a key point of contact between internal teams, consultants, and contractors, ensuring seamless communication and timely issue resolution across all stages of the project.
- You will maintain a comprehensive understanding of project status, decision-making processes, and key milestones, ensuring accurate and up-to-date documentation is shared with stakeholders both internally and externally.
- You will provide expert guidance on technical aspects of building systems design, ensuring all designs comply with industry standards and meet the client’s specifications for mission-critical environments.
- You will evaluate existing facilities for feasibility of converting to a data center environment, understanding key drivers and non-negotiables.
- You will facilitate collaboration among various technical disciplines to ensure integrated and cohesive system designs, ensuring alignment between the architectural team and other design teams.
- You will lead the onboarding and training of new design team members, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across disciplines.
- You will lead meetings focused on design, delivery, and quality to resolve critical issues and drive successful project outcomes.
- You will collaborate with the Construction Quality team, leading site reviews, system integration checks, issue resolution, and commissioning script review to ensure optimal system performance.
- You will assist the Facilities Engineering and Operations teams with technical guidance and knowledge transfer to ensure smooth system operation throughout the project lifecycle.
Requirements
- A licensed Architect with over 8 years of experience in the design, development, and operation of high-performance, mission-critical facilities.
- In-depth knowledge of construction standards, building regulations, and safety protocols for large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Strong experience in master planning data center campuses.
- Expertise in using design tools such as Revit/BIM, Bluebeam, Autodesk, or similar software to deliver high-quality design outcomes.
- Strong background in structural design, particularly for various materials like steel, concrete, and mass timber, along with a deep understanding of architectural details and building systems.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to perform detailed analysis and troubleshooting across multiple design phases.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects and lead cross-functional teams to successful project completion.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts, technical details, and project progress to diverse audiences, including stakeholders and leadership.

Which companies sponsor visas for architectural engineers in Virginia?
Large engineering and construction firms with consistent H-1B visa sponsorship records in Virginia include HNTB, Jacobs, WSP, Parsons, Dewberry, and Burns & McDonnell. Federal contractors operating in the Northern Virginia corridor tend to sponsor more frequently given the volume of government infrastructure work. Checking DOL LCA disclosure data by employer name gives you a verifiable record of past sponsorship activity for architectural engineer roles specifically.
Which visa types are most common for architectural engineer roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for architectural engineers in Virginia, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in architectural engineering or a closely related field. Some candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify under the TN visa. Architects and engineers with extraordinary ability in their field occasionally pursue O-1 visa classification, though this is far less common.
Which cities in Virginia have the most architectural engineer sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia, particularly the Tysons, Reston, and Arlington areas, has the highest concentration of architectural engineer sponsorship opportunities due to its density of federal contractors and large engineering firms. Richmond is a secondary hub with active commercial and infrastructure projects. Hampton Roads, covering Virginia Beach and Norfolk, sees demand tied to military base construction and port-related infrastructure work.
How to find architectural engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify architectural engineer roles in Virginia where employers are open to sponsoring international candidates. Rather than sorting through thousands of general postings, you can search directly for Virginia-based architectural engineer positions with confirmed sponsorship signals, which saves time during an H-1B or TN visa application cycle when timing matters.
Are there any Virginia-specific considerations for architectural engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Virginia's large federal contracting sector means some architectural engineer roles require security clearances, which can create complications for visa holders or pending applicants. The DOL prevailing wage for architectural engineers varies by metro area, with Northern Virginia rates running higher than Richmond or Roanoke. Several Virginia universities, including Virginia Tech and University of Virginia, produce a pipeline of international graduates who often enter this job market on OPT before seeking H-1B sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored architectural engineer jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
