Which companies sponsor visas for support engineers in Virginia?
Northern Virginia hosts some of the most active sponsors for support engineer roles, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Leidos, CACI International, and Booz Allen Hamilton. Managed service providers and SaaS companies clustered around Tysons Corner and Reston also file H-1B visa petitions for support engineers with regularity. Sponsorship activity tends to be highest at mid-to-large firms with established HR and legal infrastructure to handle the process.
Which visa types are most common for support engineer roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is the most frequently used visa for support engineers in Virginia, provided the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field. L-1B intracompany transferee visas are also common at large multinationals like Microsoft and AWS when the engineer is moving from an overseas office. TN visas apply for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles.
Which cities in Virginia have the most support engineer sponsorship jobs?
The Northern Virginia area, particularly Reston, Tysons Corner, Herndon, and Arlington, accounts for the large majority of support engineer sponsorship activity in the state. This corridor is home to a high concentration of cloud providers, defense contractors, and cybersecurity firms. Richmond has a smaller but growing tech presence, and Charlottesville sees some activity tied to university-affiliated technology initiatives.
How to find support engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates looking for visa sponsorship roles, including support engineer positions in Virginia. You can filter directly by role and state to see employers actively hiring and sponsoring. Because Northern Virginia's tech market moves quickly, checking Migrate Mate regularly and setting up alerts for support engineer roles gives you the best chance of catching new openings before they fill.
Are there any Virginia-specific considerations for support engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Virginia's Northern Virginia corridor sits adjacent to a large federal contracting ecosystem, which means some support engineer roles require security clearances. Non-U.S. citizens can hold certain clearance levels, but eligibility varies and the process is complex, so it is worth confirming clearance requirements with each employer before applying. The high concentration of tech employers in the region also means the DOL prevailing wage determinations for support engineers reflect a competitive local market.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored support engineer jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
