Who we are
About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.
About The Team
The HADR (High Availability and Disaster Recovery) team is responsible for offering data serving infrastructure spanning across data warehouse analytics, streaming analytics and search capabilities. The stack is supported by a collection of internally developed large scale distributed services and several popular open source technologies like Trino/Presto, Apache Pinot, Hive Metastore, ElasticSearch etc. The systems we own support all of the data serving needs of high scale services and thousands of individual Stripes across the company. We process hundreds of thousands of search and analytics shaped queries on petabytes of data ingested through real-time streaming and large batch ingestion pipelines. We are the data serving layer for one of the largest financial data lakes in the world. We are looking for a manager who is excited about Data Serving architecture and leading a team to solve challenging distributed systems problems, as well as developing empathetic partnerships with other Stripe teams to understand their use-cases and unlock new capabilities.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What you’ll do
- Work on a high-visibility team and be part of shaping Stripe’s long term Data Serving strategy.
- Work with engineers and other leaders at Stripe to understand opportunities to better leverage Apache Pinot at scale.
- Support the engineering team in achieving a high level of technical quality, reliability, and ease-of-use.
- Lead and manage processes to help the team do its best work and engage effectively with the rest of Stripe.
- Recruit great engineers, in collaboration with Stripe’s recruiting team.
- Develop engineers on the team, helping them advance in their careers.
- Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Stripe’s engineering management team.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Who you are
We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply.
- At least 3 years of experience managing teams that shipped and operated critical distributed system infrastructure.
- Successfully recruited and built great teams.
- Works effectively cross-functionally and is able to think rigorously, communicate effectively, and make or coordinate hard decisions and trade-offs.
- Thrives with a high degree of autonomy and responsibility in an ambiguous environment.
- Technical acumen to drive clarity with staff engineers about architecture and technical strategic decisions.
- Encourage a healthy and inclusive work environment that’s both challenging and supportive.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with Data Serving technology like Apache Pinot, Apache Trino, ElasticSearch and streaming platforms such as Apache Kafka or Amazon Kinesis.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for different audiences (leadership, users, company-wide).
- Strong quantitative and analytical background.
- Productively lead fully remote teams.
HYBRID WORK AT STRIPE
This role is available either in an office or a remote location (35+ miles or 56+ km from a Stripe office).
In-office expectations
Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.
Working remotely at Stripe
A remote location is defined as being 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from one of our offices. While you would be welcome to come into the office for team/business meetings, on-sites, meet-ups, and events, our expectation is you would regularly work from home rather than a Stripe office. Stripe does not cover the cost of relocating to a remote location. We encourage you to apply for roles that match the location where you currently live or plan to live.
PAY AND BENEFITS
The annual US base salary range for this role is $214,600 - $321,800. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.
Additional benefits for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; 401(k) plan; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and wellness stipends.

Which companies sponsor visas for engineering managers in Washington DC?
Federal contractors and technology firms dominate engineering manager sponsorship in the DC area. Companies including Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, SAIC, Deloitte, and Amazon Web Services have consistent H-1B sponsorship histories for engineering manager roles. Government-adjacent tech firms and cybersecurity companies in the Northern Virginia corridor are also active sponsors, given the high demand for technical leadership supporting federal programs.
Which visa types are most common for engineering manager roles in Washington DC?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for engineering managers in Washington DC, as the role typically requires a relevant bachelor's degree or higher and qualifies as a specialty occupation. L-1A intracompany transferee visas are also used when candidates are transferring from a foreign office in a managerial capacity. Some candidates with extraordinary achievement pursue the O-1A, though that pathway is less common.
Which cities in Washington DC have the most engineering manager sponsorship jobs?
Washington DC is a single-district jurisdiction, but the broader metro area extends into Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland. The highest concentration of engineering manager sponsorship roles is in the DC-Arlington-Alexandria corridor, with significant activity in Tysons, Reston, and Bethesda. These areas host federal contractors, defense technology companies, and cloud computing offices that regularly seek senior technical leaders.
How to find engineering manager visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate filters engineering manager roles specifically by visa sponsorship availability and location, making it practical to search within the Washington DC metro area without sifting through postings that don't offer sponsorship. Given that DC's market skews toward defense contractors and government technology firms, using Migrate Mate to identify which employers have active H-1B filings for engineering manager titles saves significant time in your search.
Are there any Washington DC-specific considerations for engineering managers seeking visa sponsorship?
Many DC-area engineering manager roles are tied to federal contracts, which can introduce security clearance requirements. Sponsoring an international candidate for a clearance-dependent position is uncommon, so it's worth confirming clearance requirements before applying. Roles at commercial technology firms or consulting companies without clearance requirements are generally more accessible to international candidates. The prevailing wage level for engineering managers in the DC metro area is among the highest in the country.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored engineering manager jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
