Which companies sponsor visas for nurse practitioners in Washington DC?
MedStar Health, Children's National Hospital, George Washington University Hospital, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in DC are among the health systems that have historically sponsored work visas for nurse practitioners. Federally qualified health centers serving DC's underserved neighborhoods also sponsor international NPs, particularly for primary care and mental health roles where provider shortages are most acute.
Which visa types are most common for nurse practitioner roles in Washington DC?
The H-1B visa is the most common path for nurse practitioners in DC, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a graduate-level degree. Some employers also use the EB-3 immigrant visa for permanent sponsorship. NPs from certain countries may qualify for TN or E-3 visas depending on nationality. Employers file the necessary Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before petitioning USCIS.
Which cities in Washington DC have the most nurse practitioner sponsorship jobs?
Washington DC is a single city and jurisdiction, so sponsorship activity is concentrated in specific neighborhood health systems rather than distinct cities. The highest concentration of NP sponsorship roles appears in areas surrounding major medical corridors: Georgetown, Capitol Hill, Northeast DC near Children's National, and the VA Medical Center on Irving Street. Federally affiliated facilities and university-based health systems across the District generate the most consistent sponsorship volume.
How to find nurse practitioner visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international healthcare professionals seeking visa sponsorship in the U.S.. You can filter by role and location to see nurse practitioner positions in Washington DC where employers have indicated sponsorship availability. Because NP sponsorship requires employers to initiate the H-1B or EB-3 process, focusing on larger health systems and federally qualified health centers listed on Migrate Mate increases your odds of finding willing sponsors.
Are there state-specific considerations for nurse practitioners seeking visa sponsorship in Washington DC?
DC nurse practitioners must hold a valid DC Board of Nursing license, which requires passing the NCLEX-RN and a separate NP certification from a recognized body such as ANCC or AANP. DC is a full-practice authority jurisdiction, meaning NPs can practice, prescribe, and operate independently without physician oversight. This autonomy makes DC NP roles highly attractive to employers and can broaden the range of settings willing to sponsor international candidates.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored nurse practitioner jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
