ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Factory Software team is seeking a Factory Software Engineer to bridge the gap between physical manufacturing hardware and enterprise-level orchestration. In this role, you will be responsible for the development and ownership of the mission-critical software services and data architectures that power our entire factory ecosystem. You will function as a key partner to our Manufacturing, Automation, and Quality teams, building high-performance systems that enable real-time process control, material flow orchestration, and end-to-end product genealogy. You will collaborate closely with Data Engineering and Platform teams to leverage our on-prem and cloud infrastructure, building scalable, custom solutions that serve as the digital backbone for our first-of-a-kind manufacturing lines.
What you'll do:
-
Architect and Scale the Factory Stack: Design, develop, and deliver the end-to-end software services and data architectures—built in Go and Postgres—that orchestrate novel battery electrodes and assembly lines.
-
Build the Digital Backbone: Drive the integration of real-time machine data with high-level business logic, ensuring seamless material flow, process control, and comprehensive product genealogy across the entire factory.
-
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with experienced software, data, controls, process, and quality engineers to bridge the gap between hardware and software, developing a high-quality, high-performance digital factory ecosystem.
-
Operational Excellence: Take ownership of the systems you build by participating in rotating on-call shifts and providing on-the-floor support, ensuring rapid problem-solving and continuous 24/7 production.
-
Continuous Innovation: Leverage on-prem and cloud infrastructure to build scalable solutions that replace legacy silos with a unified, software-driven manufacturing environment.
What you'll bring:
-
5+ years of industry experience building and scaling production-grade software services
-
Professional expertise writing high-performance, reusable code in Go within a collaborative environment
-
Deep experience in relational database design, schema management, and query optimization using Postgres
-
Demonstrated ability to architect and own end-to-end software systems that orchestrate complex, real-world processes
-
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to relay technical architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders
-
Proven track record of working independently with excellent time management and the ability to prioritize critical path tasks in a high-stakes environment
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
-
Significant experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, or logistics environment working with software that interacts with physical hardware is highly desirable
-
Experience collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders, including Automation, Process, and Operations teams, to define system requirements
-
Experience with distributed systems, message brokers, or containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) is a plus
-
A passion for technical mentorship and a desire to drive engineering excellence in a fast-paced, mission-driven startup environment

Which companies sponsor visas for staff software engineers in West Virginia?
Federal contractors and technology consulting firms are the most active visa sponsors for staff software engineers in West Virginia. Companies like Leidos, Northrop Grumman, and Booz Allen Hamilton have operations tied to federal contracts in the state. Regional healthcare systems and energy sector technology divisions also periodically sponsor at the staff engineer level, though sponsorship activity is less frequent than in larger tech markets.
Which visa types are most common for staff software engineer roles in West Virginia?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for staff software engineers in West Virginia, as the role meets the specialty occupation requirement through its degree-level technical requirements. Candidates from Australia may qualify for the E-3 visa, and Canadian and Mexican nationals can explore TN visa eligibility under the USMCA. Employers with established legal teams, such as large federal contractors, are generally better equipped to process these petitions.
Which cities in West Virginia have the most staff software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Charleston and Morgantown account for the majority of staff software engineer sponsorship activity in West Virginia. Charleston hosts the state's largest concentration of federal contractors and enterprise technology firms. Morgantown benefits from its proximity to West Virginia University, which supports a research and technology ecosystem that attracts engineering talent and employers willing to sponsor. Huntington has a smaller but emerging presence through healthcare technology employers.
How to find staff software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in West Virginia?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship, making it a practical starting point for staff software engineer roles in West Virginia. You can filter by state and role to surface employers who have a documented history of sponsoring work visas. Given that West Virginia has a smaller tech market, setting up alerts and checking regularly will help you catch new postings from federal contractors and regional tech employers as they appear.
Are there state-specific considerations for staff software engineers pursuing sponsorship in West Virginia?
West Virginia's tech market is heavily shaped by federal contracting, which means security clearance eligibility can be a meaningful factor alongside visa sponsorship. Some federal contract roles require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, which limits sponsorship availability compared to private-sector positions. West Virginia University's computer science and engineering programs also create a local pipeline that employers draw from, so candidates with research or academic connections to the university may find additional entry points into the sponsorship market.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored staff software engineer jobs in West Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
