How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Accounting Clerk
Target roles requiring accounting degree specificity
Look for postings that explicitly require an accounting, finance, or business degree with accounting coursework. Generic "any bachelor's degree" requirements won't support visa petitions for accounting clerk roles.
Emphasize specialized accounting software experience
Highlight experience with enterprise systems like SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks Enterprise, or industry-specific platforms. Specialized software knowledge strengthens the specialty occupation argument for visa applications.
Focus on compliance and regulatory aspects
Target positions involving tax compliance, audit preparation, or regulatory reporting. These duties require specialized accounting knowledge that supports H-1B specialty occupation requirements more effectively than basic data entry.
Consider mid-size companies over large corporations
Mid-size firms often have more flexibility in sponsorship decisions and may value specialized skills more highly. Large corporations typically have stricter sponsorship criteria and higher competition for sponsored positions.
Highlight relevant certifications and coursework
Include CPA candidacy, bookkeeping certifications, or specialized accounting coursework. Additional credentials demonstrate the specialized knowledge required for the role and strengthen visa petition arguments.
Apply to companies with established H-1B history
Research employers using DOL LCA disclosure data to identify companies that have previously sponsored accounting professionals. Past sponsorship history indicates familiarity with the visa process and willingness to sponsor again.

Do accounting clerk positions qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but only when the role requires specialized accounting knowledge and a relevant bachelor's degree. The position must involve complex financial analysis, regulatory compliance, or specialized software rather than basic data entry. USCIS requires proof that the job demands theoretical and practical application of accounting principles.
What degree requirements help with visa sponsorship for accounting clerks?
A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration with accounting concentration, or closely related field is typically required. The degree must be directly related to the job duties. Some employers may accept equivalent work experience using the 3-for-1 rule, but a relevant degree significantly strengthens the petition.
Which visa options work best for accounting clerk sponsorship?
H-1B is most common for accounting clerk positions that meet specialty occupation requirements. TN visa works for Canadian and Mexican citizens in qualifying accounting roles. E-3 visa is available for Australians in specialty accounting positions. The role must demonstrate complexity beyond basic bookkeeping for any visa type.
What makes an accounting clerk role more likely to get visa approval?
Roles involving financial analysis, audit preparation, tax compliance, cost accounting, or specialized industry knowledge have higher approval rates. The job description should emphasize analytical responsibilities, complex calculations, and decision-making rather than routine data entry tasks. Industry-specific accounting requirements also strengthen the case.
How do I find employers who sponsor accounting clerks?
Search DOL's FLAG system for LCA filings under accounting clerk or similar titles to identify sponsoring employers. Target mid-size accounting firms, manufacturing companies with complex operations, and healthcare organizations that often need specialized accounting support. Avoid basic bookkeeping positions that don't require degree-level knowledge.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Accounting Clerk jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
