How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Aws Data Engineer
Target employers with AWS in their tech stack
Companies already running workloads on AWS are far more likely to sponsor for this role. Look for job postings that mention specific services like Redshift, Glue, or EMR, those signal genuine AWS investment and reduce the risk of a specialty occupation challenge.
Document your degree-to-role connection clearly
H-1B specialty occupation requires a direct link between your degree field and the role. A degree in computer science, information systems, or a related STEM field paired with AWS certifications strengthens your petition significantly and reduces the chance of a Request for Evidence.
Get AWS certifications before applying
The AWS Certified Data Engineer or Solutions Architect certification is not required, but it materially strengthens your H-1B petition. USCIS officers look for evidence the role demands specialized knowledge, and certifications from AWS directly support that argument in your employer's petition.
Prioritize large and mid-size employers over startups
Established companies with dedicated HR and legal teams process visa petitions more smoothly. Startups can and do sponsor, but they face more scrutiny on their ability to pay and may lack the infrastructure to manage the process without delays or errors.
Negotiate a start date that accounts for processing time
Standard H-1B processing runs eight to twelve weeks without premium processing. If you need a faster timeline, ask whether the employer will pay for premium processing, which typically cuts approval to two to three weeks. Build this into your offer negotiation early.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for verified sponsoring employers
Not every job posting that mentions visa sponsorship actually follows through. Migrate Mate surfaces roles from employers with a documented history of filing H-1B and E-3 petitions for data engineering positions, so you spend less time chasing dead ends.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an AWS Data Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS has consistently approved H-1B petitions for data engineering roles when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field. The key is that the job description must require theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, not just general IT skills. Employers who include specific AWS services and data pipeline architecture in the job requirements tend to have stronger approval outcomes.
What degree do I need to get sponsored as an AWS Data Engineer?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related STEM discipline is the standard requirement. Some employers accept degrees in mathematics or statistics if combined with strong AWS and data engineering experience. USCIS also allows three years of specialized work experience to substitute for one year of formal education, so candidates without a four-year degree are not automatically disqualified, but they face a higher documentation burden.
Are AWS Data Engineer roles common in the H-1B lottery?
Yes. Data engineering and cloud infrastructure are among the most frequently sponsored technical roles in the H-1B system. Large technology companies, financial institutions, and healthcare organizations file significant volumes of petitions for these positions each year. The role's specificity, particularly when tied to a defined cloud platform like AWS, also tends to hold up better under USCIS scrutiny than more generalist IT job titles.
Can Australian citizens use the E-3 visa for AWS Data Engineer roles in the U.S.?
Yes. The E-3 visa is available exclusively to Australian citizens and covers specialty occupation roles, which AWS Data Engineer positions routinely satisfy. The process skips the H-1B lottery entirely, and the 10,500 annual cap has never been reached, meaning Australians can apply year-round. You'll need an employer to file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor and a confirmed job offer before scheduling your consulate interview in Australia.
Where can I find AWS Data Engineer jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists AWS Data Engineer roles specifically filtered for employers with a history of visa sponsorship, including H-1B and E-3 petitions. Rather than sorting through generic job postings and guessing whether a company will actually sponsor, Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have filed petitions for comparable roles, saving significant time in a job search where every week matters if you're on OPT or between visa statuses.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Aws Data Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
