About the Positions
We're seeking experienced Structural Steel Bridge Inspectors to support large, complex bridge and transportation infrastructure programs within highways, roads, and bridges, transit (bus and rail), and related heavy-civil environments delivered through both traditional and alternative methods. These roles support inspection of structural steel fabrication and field erection activities for cable stayed bridge and transportation programs, including welded and bolted connections, material certification, fracture-critical members, cable stressing, document adjustments to stay forces, anchorage inspections, and protective coatings systems. Work may occur in fabrication shops, active construction sites, or both, depending on program needs. These are not general construction inspection roles. These positions are intended for inspectors with demonstrated experience working on structural steel bridge systems in complex environments where quality, compliance, and documentation are critical.
This post is for a near term future role and not for a specific opportunity that is available right now. We accept applications and conduct interviews in advance of upcoming hiring needs. When a candidate is selected, their profile is activated in our talent pool for this specialty area. We notify our talent pool candidates first whenever we have a project need.
Responsibilities
may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Inspect structural steel fabrication activities in shop and field environments, including welding operations, bolting, material traceability, and dimensional tolerances.
- Perform field inspection of structural steel erection activities, including fit-up, alignment, connection installation, and erection sequencing.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Bridge Inspector Jobs
Target state transportation departments
State DOTs regularly hire bridge inspectors and have established H-1B sponsorship processes. They're less concerned about immigration costs than private firms and value engineering expertise over immediate U.S. experience.
Highlight structural analysis skills
Emphasize experience with bridge design codes, load rating calculations, and structural assessment software. These specialized skills directly support the H-1B specialty occupation requirement for engineering positions.
Consider federal contractor roles
Companies with federal infrastructure contracts often need security clearance-eligible staff. While you can't get clearance initially, demonstrating willingness to pursue it shows long-term commitment to employers.
Emphasize safety inspection certifications
NBIS certification, SPRAT rope access training, or underwater inspection credentials make you more valuable. Employers are more likely to sponsor candidates with specialized inspection skills they can't find locally.
Apply during infrastructure funding cycles
Federal infrastructure bills create hiring surges at state agencies and contractors. Time your applications when new projects are launching and agencies have expanded budgets for engineering staff.
Research state PE reciprocity rules
Some states accept international engineering degrees for PE licensing pathways. Having a clear route to Professional Engineer status makes you more attractive for long-term sponsorship and career advancement.

Find Bridge Inspector JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do bridge inspectors qualify for H-1B visas?
Yes, bridge inspector positions typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship as they require specialized engineering knowledge and a bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or related engineering field. The role meets USCIS specialty occupation requirements due to the technical expertise needed for structural analysis and safety assessments.
What degree do I need for bridge inspector visa sponsorship?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or construction engineering. Some positions accept mechanical engineering with relevant coursework. The degree must be directly related to structural analysis, as USCIS scrutinizes the connection between education and job duties for specialty occupation approval.
Which employers sponsor bridge inspectors most often?
State departments of transportation are the most reliable sponsors, followed by federal agencies like FHWA and consulting firms with government contracts. Private engineering consultancies also sponsor, but prefer candidates with existing work authorization or specialized certifications like NBIS qualification.
Can I get sponsored without U.S. bridge inspection experience?
Yes, but you'll need strong structural engineering fundamentals and relevant international experience. State agencies often provide NBIS training to new hires. Highlighting experience with bridge design, structural analysis software, or infrastructure assessment in your home country strengthens your application significantly.
How to find Bridge Inspector jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Bridge Inspector positions with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international professionals with sponsored opportunities. Focus on infrastructure consulting firms, government transportation departments, and civil engineering companies that frequently hire foreign Bridge Inspectors. Common visa options include H-1B, TN, and EB-3 visas depending on your qualifications and location preferences.
How long does H-1B processing take for bridge inspector roles?
Standard processing takes 3-8 months from petition filing. Government agencies and contractors often file in April for October start dates. Premium processing reduces USCIS review to 15 days but adds fees. Some positions may qualify for cap-exempt status if working for government agencies or nonprofits.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Bridge Inspector jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
