Chemical Engineer Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
Chemical engineers are well-positioned for H-1B sponsorship since the role is a textbook specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's in chemical engineering. Oil and gas companies, chemical manufacturers (Dow, BASF, DuPont), pharma firms, and semiconductor companies sponsor regularly. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican engineers. EB-2 green card sponsorship is common for experienced chemical engineers, and the field's tight labor market works in your favor. For detailed occupation requirements, see the O*NET profile.

About us
Molten Industries advances how people live, build, and move through innovative materials, chemicals, and fuels. We are commercializing breakthrough technology to make battery-grade graphite and clean hydrogen using only methane and electricity as inputs. Graphite is a critical mineral that makes up as much as 25% of the mass of lithium-ion batteries used in phones, laptops, and electric vehicles. Molten has developed an entirely new method of graphite production with a fundamentally new supply chain and cost structure.
Molten started in 2021 out of a garage at Stanford and is backed by top-tier venture capital firms and a world-class advisory board. We believe in using our talents for the most meaningful work of our lives - mitigating the effects of climate change. We want to do the kind of work that you can write home about. The work that you’ll tell your grandkids about. Engineering feats, growth miracles, and rock-solid, real-world change. At Molten we believe in dreaming big, working with urgency, and getting our hands dirty.
The Role
As a member of Molten’s early team, you will support the development, optimization, and scale-up of chemical processing for graphite production at the lab, pilot, and commercial scale. You will lead the design, procurement, commissioning, and operation of pilot to commercial scale chemical processing equipment. You will optimize chemical processes to produce high-quality graphite. You are a scrappy self-starter with a bias to action. You enjoy being hands-on and building physical systems, and you are comfortable translating complex problems into achievable goals.
What you will do
- Lead the design, procurement, commissioning, and operation of pilot to commercial scale graphite anode processing plants, especially purification, mixing, filtration, and coating processes
- Optimize Molten’s graphite anode material at pilot and commercial scale to meet customer quality, purity, and performance requirements
- Work closely with a small technical founding team to push our graphite production technology to industrial scale
What you will bring
- 5+ years of experience working with chemical processes at the pilot or commercial scale
- BS / MS / PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Process Engineering (or equivalent)
- Hands-on experience designing, building, and operating chemical manufacturing or processing plants at the pilot to commercial scale
- Experience designing, building, and operating chemical plants for 24/7 industrial use, with safety at the forefront
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time
- Wear personal protective equipment including but not limited to full-face respirators, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hats, and steel toe safety shoes
- Occasionally lift, push, and carry up to 50 lbs
- Reach low shelves or items on the floor, stoop, lay, bend, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, twist, and crawl to perform critical maintenance and assembly
Bonus Points
- Startup experience or experience in a fast-paced environment
- Experience working with production, processing, and handling of graphite, powders, and/or acids
Perks and Benefits
- Competitive salary
- Meaningful equity compensation
- Health, dental and vision insurance covered by Molten
- Generous 401k matching program
- Flexible time off

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Chemical Engineer
Target chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturers
Dow, BASF, ExxonMobil, and Pfizer have historically sponsored H-1B visas for chemical engineers. Large process-industry employers with global operations are more likely to have immigration infrastructure and budget allocated for sponsorship.
Obtain a process safety credential
Certifications like the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or experience with Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) under OSHA's PSM standard (29 CFR 1910.119) demonstrate specialized knowledge that strengthens your H-1B petition. Process safety expertise is in demand and difficult to find among early-career domestic candidates.
Leverage STEM OPT in process engineering roles
Chemical engineering is STEM-eligible, giving you up to 36 months of OPT work authorization. Use this period to gain hands-on experience with process simulation tools like Aspen Plus and HYSYS, along with plant operations that make you difficult to replace mid-project.
Explore roles in semiconductor manufacturing
Fab process engineering at companies like TSMC (Arizona), Intel, Samsung, and GlobalFoundries is a growing area where chemical engineers are in demand. The CHIPS Act has driven significant U.S. fab investment, creating new roles that often require sponsorship due to the specialized talent pool.
Consider specialty chemical and battery companies
Companies producing lithium-ion battery materials, specialty polymers, or advanced coatings are scaling U.S. operations and often need chemical engineers with electrochemistry or materials processing expertise. These niche roles may face less domestic competition, making employers more open to sponsorship.

Do chemical engineering companies sponsor work visas?
Large chemical manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and energy firms do sponsor H-1B visas for chemical engineers, though the frequency varies by company size and role specialty. Companies like Dow, BASF, and ExxonMobil have established sponsorship processes. Roles requiring specific process expertise - such as catalysis, polymer processing, or bioprocess engineering - tend to receive sponsorship more readily.
What chemical engineering specializations are in highest demand for sponsorship?
Process engineering roles in semiconductor fabrication, battery manufacturing, and pharmaceutical production currently have strong demand. The expansion of U.S. chip fabs under the CHIPS Act and the growth of EV battery plants have created shortages in these areas. Bioprocess engineering for biologics manufacturing is another high-demand niche.
Can chemical engineers work on OPT at plants with hazardous materials?
Yes, there are no visa-specific restrictions preventing OPT holders from working at chemical plants with hazardous materials. However, some facilities with Department of Defense contracts or classified processes may have access restrictions for non-U.S. persons under ITAR or export control regulations. Commercial chemical plants, refineries, and pharmaceutical facilities generally do not have these restrictions.
Is a PE license valuable for chemical engineers seeking sponsorship?
A PE license is less common among chemical engineers than civil engineers, but it can strengthen a visa petition by demonstrating advanced professional standing. In roles involving plant design, process safety, or environmental compliance, a PE license may be required for stamping and sealing engineering documents. It adds another credential that supports the specialty occupation argument.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Chemical Engineer jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage" — the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level — for example, a chemical engineer in Texas will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search.
