Target industries with high LCA filing volume
Manufacturing, healthcare, and defense contracting companies file the most LCAs for Cost Accounting Manager roles. These industries have established immigration programs and finance teams familiar with sponsoring specialized accounting positions through H-1B.
Confirm your degree field aligns with the role
USCIS expects a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. A general business degree may face scrutiny. A CPA credential or CMA certification strengthens your specialty occupation case significantly when paired with your degree.
Understand the LCA prevailing wage requirement
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your compensation meets the prevailing wage for Cost Accounting Manager in that metro area. This protects you and is a required step before any H-1B petition reaches USCIS.
L-1 is an option if you're transferring within a multinational
If you've worked for a multinational company abroad for at least one year, an L-1B intracompany transfer may be available. Cost Accounting Managers with specialized knowledge of proprietary systems or methodologies often qualify without entering the H-1B lottery.
Ask about cap-exempt employers during your search
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated organizations are H-1B cap-exempt. They can sponsor Cost Accounting Managers year-round without lottery risk, which is worth considering if your job search includes higher education or research sectors.
Get your foreign credentials evaluated early
If you completed your accounting degree outside the U.S., obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before applying. USCIS needs to confirm your degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's in accounting or a related specialty field.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cost Accounting Manager recognized as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS consistently recognizes Cost Accounting Manager as a specialty occupation because the role requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a directly related field. DOL LCA disclosure data shows consistent filings for this title across manufacturing and healthcare employers, indicating strong precedent for approval.
Which visa categories can cover a Cost Accounting Manager role?
H-1B visa is the most common path. L-1B applies if you're transferring from a foreign affiliate with at least one year of qualifying employment. O-1A is possible but uncommon, as it requires demonstrating extraordinary ability in the field. TN visas cover accountants for Canadian and Mexican nationals under specific qualifying criteria.
Do I need a CPA to get H-1B sponsorship as a Cost Accounting Manager?
A CPA is not required, but it strengthens your petition. USCIS evaluates whether the position normally requires a specific degree, not a license. However, if your employer's job description lists CPA as preferred or required, having one reduces the risk of an RFE challenging the specialty occupation determination.
How can I find Cost Accounting Manager jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles open to visa sponsorship, which removes the uncertainty of asking each employer individually. Cost Accounting Manager openings from manufacturers, hospitals, and corporate finance teams appear regularly. Searching by role and filtering for H-1B-willing employers saves significant time during your job search.
Can a Cost Accounting Manager role qualify for an EB-2 or EB-3 green card?
Yes. Cost Accounting Managers typically qualify under EB-2 if the employer requires a master's degree or equivalent, or under EB-3 for roles requiring a bachelor's degree. Employers must complete PERM labor certification first, which involves advertising the position and demonstrating no qualified U.S. workers are available. Timelines vary significantly by country of birth.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Cost Accounting Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
