About Upstart
At Upstart, we’re united by a mission that matters: to radically reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. Every day, we bring creativity, experimentation, and advanced AI to reshape access to credit, helping millions move forward financially with clarity and confidence.
As the leading AI lending marketplace, we partner with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through technology that’s both radically intelligent and deeply human. Our platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 1,800 signals, powering smarter, fairer decisions for millions of customers. But the numbers only hint at the impact. Every idea, every voice, and every contribution moves us closer to a world where credit never stands between people and their financial progress.
We’re proudly digital-first, giving most Upstarters the flexibility to do their best work from wherever they thrive, alongside teammates across 80+ cities in the US and Canada. Digital-first doesn’t mean distant. We’re intentional about in-person connection through team onsites, planning sessions, and moments that spark creativity and trust. And whether you choose to work primarily from home or collaborate in-person from one of our offices in Columbus, Austin, the Bay Area, or New York City (opening Summer 2026), you’ll have the support to work in the way that works best for you.
If you’re energized by tackling meaningful problems, excited to innovate with purpose, and motivated by work that truly matters, we’d love to hear from you.
The Team:
As Upstart’s Brand & Creative Team, we shape how the brand comes to life across every touchpoint — defining our voice, personality, and emotional connection with borrowers and partners. We sit within Growth, designing and creating for impact across all channels, from the digital surfaces where consumers first discover us to the campaigns and brand systems that make Upstart trusted and remembered.
As Creative Director, Brand at Upstart, you’ll be a senior creative leader for our brand's most visible owned channels including: organic social media, our website, and our brand design systems — while also driving creative vision for brand campaigns. You'll set the creative bar, lead the team, and champion the work that builds lasting brand love at scale.
This role is ideal for a player/coach — someone equally comfortable guiding a team and doing the work required to get something off the ground. This is an impactful role with the opportunity to be a key driver in making Upstart a beloved brand, cultural driver, and household name.
How you’ll make an impact
- Lead creative strategy and execution across Upstart's owned brand channels: organic social, our website, and brand design systems.
- Grow, inspire, and develop a multi-disciplinary creative team across brand disciplines—setting a high creative standard, delivering direct and actionable feedback, and building the kind of team culture where talented people come to do their best work.
- Drive brand campaign creative from concept to delivery, including leading both internal development and directing agency partners across TV, OOH, digital, and emerging media.
- Actively evolve how Upstart uses AI tools to accelerate creative output without sacrificing craft.
- Partner closely with Marketing, Product, and senior leadership to align creative strategy with business goals — showing up as a trusted creative thought partner across the organization, not just a creative executor.
Minimum Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in brand creative, design, or creative direction, with at least 4+ years leading and managing multi-disciplinary creative teams.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing brand campaign development end-to-end across channels including TV, OOH, and digital with both internal teams and external agency partners.
- Portfolio showcasing excellence in brand identity work, visual design systems, and effective metrics-driving, multi-channel campaign creative.
- Proven track record of developing creative talent and building team culture across disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Deep knowledge of organic social content strategy and platform-native creative across Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and emerging channels.
- Familiarity with website design + content strategy and a track record of partnering with web and UX teams to deliver quality digital experiences.
- Ability to translate brand strategy into scalable design systems and guidelines adopted org-wide.
- Experience at a consumer-facing tech brand or other regulated industry brand.
- Advanced fluency with AI-assisted creative tools and a demonstrated approach to using emerging technologies as a force-multiplier for creative quality and output.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Creative Director Jobs
Emphasize strategic leadership over pure creativity
Highlight responsibilities like developing brand strategies, leading creative teams, and making business-critical design decisions. USCIS values roles requiring specialized knowledge in creative strategy and management rather than general artistic skills.
Document your portfolio's business impact
Quantify campaign results, brand recognition improvements, and revenue growth from your creative work. Include metrics like engagement rates, conversion improvements, and awards that demonstrate measurable business value from your creative direction.
Target agencies and studios with H-1B experience
Focus on established creative agencies, advertising firms, and design studios that regularly sponsor visas. These employers understand the specialty occupation requirements and can better articulate the role's complexity to USCIS.
Align degree requirements in job descriptions
Ensure job postings specify a bachelor's degree requirement in design, marketing, communications, or related field. Generic degree requirements weaken specialty occupation arguments for H-1B petitions in creative roles.
Build portfolio of specialty knowledge
Develop expertise in emerging areas like UX strategy, digital brand management, or data-driven creative decisions. These specialized skills help differentiate your role from general graphic design positions during USCIS review.

Find Creative Director JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Creative Directors qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, Creative Directors qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the role requires specialized knowledge in creative strategy, brand development, or design leadership. The position must require a bachelor's degree in design, marketing, fine arts, or related field. USCIS approves these roles more readily when employers emphasize strategic and managerial responsibilities rather than general creative tasks.
What degree do I need for Creative Director visa sponsorship?
Most Creative Director positions require a bachelor's degree in graphic design, marketing, communications, fine arts, or related field. Some employers accept degrees in business or psychology with significant creative experience. The key is that the job posting must specify the degree requirement and the employer must explain why that specific education is necessary for the role.
How to find Creative Director jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Creative Director positions with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international talent with sponsoring employers. Focus your search on advertising agencies, tech companies, media corporations, and design studios that commonly sponsor H-1B, O-1, or L-1 visas for creative leadership roles. These employers often need experienced creative professionals to lead campaigns, brand strategies, and design teams across global markets.
Can Creative Directors get O-1 visas instead of H-1B?
Yes, Creative Directors with significant industry recognition may qualify for O-1 extraordinary ability visas. This includes major advertising awards, published work in industry publications, media coverage of your campaigns, or leadership roles at notable agencies. O-1 visas bypass the H-1B lottery and can be filed year-round, making them attractive for established creative professionals.
Which companies sponsor Creative Directors for work visas?
Advertising agencies, design studios, media companies, and large corporations with in-house creative teams regularly sponsor Creative Directors. Companies like Ogilvy, BBDO, Pentagram, and major tech firms have experience with visa sponsorship. Startups and smaller agencies may be less familiar with the H-1B process but can still sponsor if they understand the requirements.
How do I strengthen my Creative Director sponsorship case?
Focus on strategic and leadership responsibilities in your job description. Document portfolio results with business metrics like campaign ROI, brand awareness improvements, and team management experience. Include any industry awards, published work, or speaking engagements. Employers should emphasize how your specialized creative knowledge directly impacts business goals and requires advanced education or experience.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Creative Director jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
