Target nonprofits with H-1B filing history
Hospitals, universities, and large foundations file H-1B petitions most consistently. Smaller community nonprofits rarely have the legal infrastructure to sponsor. Prioritize organizations with dedicated HR teams and a history of retaining international staff.
Frame your degree as directly relevant
H-1B eligibility requires a specialty occupation. Degrees in nonprofit management, public administration, business, or communications tie cleanly to this role. A mismatched degree can trigger USCIS scrutiny, so emphasize how your field of study informs your fundraising strategy.
Highlight your major gifts and campaign track record
Sponsoring employers need to justify the hire to USCIS. Concrete results, including campaign totals raised, donor portfolios managed, and endowment contributions secured, give the employer a defensible record of specialized expertise that generalist candidates cannot replicate.
Understand the LCA prevailing wage requirement
Your employer must certify your compensation meets the Department of Labor prevailing wage for your role and location before filing your H-1B. Philanthropy director wages vary significantly by region, so the certified wage floor will differ between New York and Omaha.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status early
Universities, teaching hospitals, and affiliated research nonprofits are often cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the lottery. If you have offers from both cap-subject and cap-exempt organizations, the cap-exempt path is significantly faster.
Factor in the H-1B lottery timeline for your job search
If your prospective employer is cap-subject, registration opens in March and selection results come weeks later. Build this uncertainty into your timeline. Starting your search in late autumn gives you time to secure an offer before the registration window opens.

Find Director Of Philanthropy JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Director of Philanthropy role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS assesses whether the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Senior fundraising leadership roles at established nonprofits typically meet this standard, particularly when the job description specifies a degree in nonprofit management, business, public administration, or a related discipline. Vaguely written job descriptions that accept any bachelor's degree can weaken the petition, so the employer's offer letter and LCA documentation matter.
Which visa types are most commonly used to sponsor Directors of Philanthropy?
The H-1B is the most common path. Cap-exempt employers, including universities and hospital systems with philanthropy departments, can file year-round outside the lottery. The O-1A is an option for candidates with extraordinary recognition in the nonprofit or philanthropic sector, such as national awards or significant media coverage of their fundraising work. Australians may also qualify for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and faster timelines.
How can I find Director of Philanthropy jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Most job postings do not explicitly advertise sponsorship, so filtering by employer type is more reliable than searching by sponsorship flag. Migrate Mate focuses specifically on visa-sponsoring employers and surfaces philanthropy and development leadership roles at organizations with H-1B filing history, saving you from applying to roles where sponsorship was never a realistic possibility.
Does nonprofit size affect whether a Director of Philanthropy can get sponsored?
Significantly. Large nonprofits, foundations, and university advancement offices typically have in-house legal counsel or established immigration law firm relationships, making sponsorship operationally straightforward. Smaller nonprofits with limited HR capacity often have no sponsorship process in place and may be unwilling to build one for a single hire, even when the candidate is highly qualified.
Can previous fundraising experience substitute for a degree when applying for H-1B sponsorship?
Only in limited circumstances. USCIS allows three years of specialized experience to substitute for one year of formal education, meaning a candidate without a bachelor's degree would need roughly 12 years of progressively responsible fundraising experience. In practice, most employers sponsoring a Director of Philanthropy will require a formal degree, both to meet internal hiring standards and to reduce USCIS petition risk.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Director Of Philanthropy jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
