How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Event Planner
Target corporate event planning roles
Large corporations, hotels, and convention centers are more likely to sponsor event planners than small agencies. Focus on companies with established HR departments and visa sponsorship experience.
Emphasize specialized event management skills
Highlight expertise in large-scale corporate events, international conferences, or technical trade shows. Specialized knowledge strengthens the case for why the role requires your specific skills.
Consider hospitality management positions
Hotel chains and resort companies regularly sponsor event coordinators and meeting planners. These roles often have clearer degree requirements and established sponsorship practices within the hospitality industry.
Document your event planning education
A bachelor's degree in hospitality management, marketing, communications, or business administration supports H-1B eligibility. Specialized event planning certifications can supplement but not replace the degree requirement.
Research company event volumes
Companies that host multiple large events annually are better sponsorship candidates. Review corporate websites and press releases to identify organizations with substantial event planning needs requiring specialized coordination.
Apply early in the fiscal year
Event planning positions often align with corporate budget cycles. Applying in October through February increases chances of securing sponsorship before H-1B registration deadlines and budget constraints.

Do event planners qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, event planners can qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree in hospitality management, marketing, communications, or related field. The role must involve specialized knowledge like managing complex corporate events, international conferences, or technical trade shows. Employers must demonstrate why the position specifically requires degreed expertise rather than general event coordination skills.
What degree do I need for event planner H-1B sponsorship?
Event planning H-1B positions typically require a bachelor's degree in hospitality management, marketing, communications, business administration, or public relations. The key is showing how your specific degree relates to the specialized event planning requirements. Some positions accept related fields like tourism management or international business if the role involves corresponding specialized functions.
Which companies sponsor event planners for work visas?
Hotels, convention centers, large corporations, and event management companies sponsor event planners. Major hotel chains like Marriott and Hilton regularly sponsor meeting planners. Technology companies, pharmaceutical firms, and financial institutions sponsor corporate event coordinators. Convention centers in major cities also sponsor specialized event management positions requiring specific expertise.
What's the H-1B approval rate for event planning positions?
Event planning H-1B approval rates vary significantly based on how well the position is documented as requiring specialized skills. Roles at established companies with clear degree requirements and specialized event management responsibilities have higher approval rates. Generic event coordination positions without demonstrated specialty occupation requirements face more scrutiny from USCIS adjudicators.
Can event planners get sponsored without hospitality experience?
Yes, event planners can get sponsored without direct hospitality experience if they have relevant skills in project management, marketing coordination, or corporate communications. The key is demonstrating how your background translates to specialized event planning requirements. Some companies value diverse experience in logistics, vendor management, or client relations for complex corporate event coordination roles.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Event Planner jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
