Welcome to the intersection of energy and home services. At NRG, we’re driven by our passion to create a smarter, cleaner and more connected future.
Vivint Smart Home, an NRG owned company, is a leading smart home company in the United States, dedicated to redefining the home experience with intelligent products and services. We find purpose in proactively protecting and keeping our customers connected to home, no matter where they are. Join the Smart Home team to create smarter, safer and more sustainable homes.
Position Summary: Sr. Director Product Mgmt. - Hardware
In this key leadership role, you will serve as the Senior Director of Product Management, acting as the single-threaded technical product leader for Vivint’s core hardware and smart home ecosystem. You will operate with a high degree of autonomy, serving as an independent strategic engine for the organization. You are responsible for defining the 3-year product hardware strategy and technical roadmap, expanding our physical suite from standalone components into a cohesive, highly intelligent ecosystem.
This role requires a unique intersection of physical hardware lifecycle mastery and cutting-edge software execution, specifically focused on deploying advanced machine learning and AI experiences to millions of users. You will lead a team of Technical Product Managers and work cross-functionally to ensure our devices work seamlessly on behalf of our customers—giving back time, keeping them safe, and saving them money.
Primary Responsibilities
Strategic Hardware & Ecosystem Leadership
- Hardware Portfolio Strategy: Own the definition, multi-year sequencing, and execution of Vivint’s core device portfolio roadmap (including intelligent cameras, panels, sensors, and perimeter security devices).
- Ecosystem Orchestration: Serve as the strategic thought leader on how disparate hardware endpoints, cloud platforms, and local connectivity protocols function together as a unified, frictionless, and personalized Vivint ecosystem.
- White Space Incubation: Autonomously identify, evaluate, and secure investment for "white space" opportunities, disruptive hardware technologies, and emerging connectivity standards to expand the enterprise footprint.
AI Experiences & Technical Execution
- AI Feature Roadmap: Define and drive the technical product vision for embedded and cloud-based AI experiences, transforming reactive hardware into proactive, predictive systems (e.g., leveraging computer vision, edge-AI processing, and machine learning models).
- Technical Deep-Dives: Author high-quality, data-driven narrative documents (PRFAQs, 3-Year Operating Plans) to align senior executive leadership (VP+) on high-stakes product investments, technical trade-offs, and architectural dependencies.
- Lifecycle & Performance Mechanisms: Establish and scale rigorous product planning and operational review mechanisms (such as hardware-software integration loops, lifecycle milestones, and usage telemetry tracking) to ensure data-driven iterations across the portfolio.
Leadership, Influence & Team Coaching
- Team Management: Directly manage, mentor, and scale a lean team of high-performing Technical Product Managers, fostering a deep culture of product ownership, analytical rigor, and extreme customer-centricity.
- Independent Matrixed Leadership: Operate independently to influence, unblock, and align a highly matrixed, multi-disciplinary organization spanning Product, Software/Hardware Engineering, Industrial Design, Supply Chain, and AI Data Science teams.
- Execution Excellence: Translate complex, high-level corporate visions into precise, unambiguous technical requirements, maintaining a relentless path from initial prototype optimization to high-volume global manufacturing.
- Post-Launch Analytics: Own the post launch product and data deep dives, ensuring once launched our products are best in class and maintain operability across all devices. While also ensuring that you are building in the right metrics and measurements to self-heal and monitor our hardware once in the market.
Required Skills & Functional Dimensions
- Autonomous Strategic Mindset: Proven ability to define long-term product frameworks and navigate intense ambiguity independently. You must be comfortable making high-impact decisions and establishing a product path without complete data.
- Hardware-Software Lifecycle Mastery: Deep, end-to-end familiarity with consumer electronics product development, including industrial design constraints, firmware, embedded systems, global supply chain dependencies, and post-launch ecosystem scaling.
- AI & ML Literacy: Solid technical understanding of how to apply machine learning approaches to consumer-facing hardware architectures (e.g., object detection, predictive automation, and cloud-to-edge processing architectures).
- Stakeholder Influence & Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Proven track record of presenting complex technical strategies.
Required Education & Experience
- Experience: 10+ years of product management experience, with at least 5+ years dedicated specifically to shipping complex consumer electronics, IoT devices, or highly integrated smart home ecosystems.
- Technical Background: Demonstrated experience managing products that require close coordination with software engineers, hardware architects, and data/AI scientists. Direct experience with smart home standards (e.g., Matter, Zigbee, Thread) is a significant plus.
- Leadership Track Record: 3+ years of experience directly managing and developing technical product professionals, with a proven ability to scale team capabilities.
- Education: B.S. or M.S. in a Technical Field (Computer Science, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline); MBA or equivalent business experience preferred.

Emphasize strategic product leadership experience
Highlight experience leading product roadmaps, cross-functional teams, and P&L responsibility. Director-level product roles require demonstrable strategic impact that justifies specialty occupation classification for H-1B petitions.
Document your technical or MBA background
Most Director PM roles require either technical degrees (CS, Engineering) or MBA credentials. Having both significantly strengthens visa applications by demonstrating the specialized knowledge needed for senior product management.
Target companies with established sponsorship programs
Large tech companies, SaaS platforms, and venture-backed startups are most likely to sponsor director-level product roles. Check LCA disclosure data to identify employers with recent product management H-1B approvals.
Prepare evidence of product launch successes
Document specific product launches, user growth metrics, and revenue impact you've driven. USCIS wants to see that director-level PM roles require specialized expertise beyond general management skills.
Consider O-1 for exceptional product leaders
Directors with industry recognition, speaking experience, or notable product successes may qualify for O-1 visas. This bypasses H-1B lottery uncertainty and allows faster processing for proven product leaders.
Understand the degree-role connection requirement
Director PM positions must demonstrate why a specific degree field is required. Technical product roles favor engineering backgrounds; consumer products may require MBA or business degrees for specialization justification.
Frequently Asked Questions
What degree requirements do Director of Product Management roles have for H-1B sponsorship?
Most Director PM positions require either a technical bachelor's degree (Computer Science, Engineering) or MBA for H-1B visa qualification. The key is demonstrating that the specific role requires specialized knowledge from that degree field, not just general management skills. Some positions may accept business or related degrees with significant product management experience.
How to find Director, Product Management jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Director, Product Management roles with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international talent with sponsoring employers. Focus your search on tech companies, SaaS firms, and Fortune 500 organizations that commonly sponsor H-1B, O-1, and L-1 visas for senior product leadership positions. These companies often need experienced directors to lead product strategy and innovation teams.
Do Director of Product Management positions typically get H-1B approval?
Director PM roles generally have strong H-1B approval rates when properly documented, as they clearly require specialized knowledge and strategic expertise. USCIS approves these petitions when employers demonstrate the position requires specific technical or business education combined with advanced product management skills that distinguish it from general management roles.
Can I get visa sponsorship for Director PM roles without an MBA?
Yes, technical degrees often work better for Director PM positions at tech companies. Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical degrees combined with product management experience can satisfy H-1B requirements. Some employers prefer technical backgrounds over MBAs for product director roles, especially in B2B or technical product companies.
What's the difference between H-1B and O-1 sponsorship for Director PM roles?
H-1B requires proving the role needs specialized degree-level knowledge, while O-1 requires demonstrating extraordinary ability in product management. Director PMs with industry recognition, successful exits, or notable product launches may qualify for O-1, which has no annual cap and faster processing than H-1B lottery uncertainty.
Do startups sponsor Director of Product Management positions for visas?
Many venture-backed startups sponsor Director PM roles, especially Series A and beyond companies needing experienced product leaders. Early-stage startups may lack resources for sponsorship, but growing companies often prioritize visa sponsorship for senior product talent. Check the company's previous LCA filings to gauge their sponsorship willingness.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Director, Product Management jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
