INTRODUCTION
Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. The Checkout Product team is at the heart of this mission—powering Affirm’s core payment experience, frequently seen at merchant point of sale. This experience is distributed through direct merchant integrations and strategic platform partners, and is driven by a sophisticated, real-time, risk-based decisioning system spanning Identity, Fraud, Credit, and Pricing. We are looking for a Senior Director of Consumer Risk product to lead this critical surface area within Checkout. In this role, you will own the product vision, strategy, and execution across Credit, Pricing, and Fraud, enabling Affirm to grow responsibly while delivering best-in-class consumer and merchant experiences. Affirm’s proprietary underwriting is one of our greatest strengths. We only make money when consumers pay us back on time—aligning incentives and fundamentally reimagining how credit should work. As the leader of Consumer Risk product, you will help scale and evolve this system, balancing customer trust, merchant performance, and long-term business outcomes. This is a highly cross-functional, analytically rigorous, and commercially impactful role. You will lead and scale a team of Product Managers, partner deeply with Engineering, Machine Learning, Analytics, Risk, Finance, Legal, Design, and GTM teams, and influence senior leaders across the company.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Own the end-to-end product vision, strategy, and execution for Consumer Risk within Checkout, encompassing Credit decisioning, Pricing, and Fraud prevention
Translate Affirm’s mission into a clear product roadmap that balances growth, risk, customer trust, and platform scalability
Lead and scale a team of Product Managers owning distinct Consumer Risk surface areas, fostering a culture of accountability, learning, and high performance
Partner closely with Machine Learning, Analytics and Engineering to shape model-driven product experiences, including underwriting logic, pricing frameworks, fraud signals, and decisioning platforms
Drive quantitative storytelling—using data, experiments, and modeling to inform strategy, influence stakeholders, and guide tradeoffs
Champion a customer-first mindset, ensuring risk experiences are transparent, fair, and intuitive for consumers while delivering strong outcomes for merchants
Collaborate cross-functionally with Risk, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Design, Marketing, and GTM teams to deliver cohesive, scalable solutions
Set and own key performance metrics (e.g., approval rate, conversion, loss rate, unit economics, LTV, fraud outcomes, customer trust metrics) and hold teams accountable to results
Navigate complex organizational dynamics and influence senior stakeholders, including the executive team, with clear articulation of strategy, tradeoffs, and impact
Balance near-term execution with long-term platform investments, ensuring Consumer Risk capabilities scale with Affirm’s growth and partner ecosystem
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
12+ years of Product Management experience, including leadership roles on fast-paced teams driving responsible, sustainable growth
Deep experience working with Credit, Pricing, and/or Fraud stakeholders, with a strong understanding of:
+ Credit: underwriting tradeoffs, unit economics, loss management, regulatory considerations
+ Pricing: risk-based pricing, margin optimization, experimentation, and fairness considerations
+ Fraud: adversarial systems, real-time decisioning, false positive/negative tradeoffs, and customer trust
Strong quantitative and analytical orientation—comfortable engaging in model-level discussions, using data to drive decisions, and translating complexity into clear narratives
Experience building and scaling platform and decisioning products, not just surface-level UX
Proven track record of managing and mentoring large, geographically distributed PM teams
Commercially minded with a high-agency, bias-to-action mindset and comfort making hard tradeoffs in ambiguous environments
Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across functions and levels
Experience working in design-forward organizations that prioritize clarity, transparency, and high-quality user experiences
A systems thinker who can balance short-term business impact with long-term scalability and technical health
Fintech, payments, or risk-heavy consumer product experience is a strong plus

Which companies sponsor visas for director, product management roles in Washington DC?
Federal technology contractors and defense-adjacent firms are among the most active sponsors at the director, product management level in DC. Companies like Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, SAIC, Palantir, and Accenture Federal Services have sponsored H-1B petitions for senior product roles. Large commercial tech companies with DC offices, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, also sponsor at this level for roles tied to government cloud and enterprise product lines.
Which visa types are most common for director, product management roles in Washington DC?
The H-1B is the most common visa for director, product management roles in DC, given the seniority and specialized nature of the position. Some candidates with extensive leadership records may qualify for the O-1A, which recognizes extraordinary ability and is not subject to the H-1B lottery. Intracompany transferees from multinational firms can also pursue the L-1A, which covers managers and executives transferring to a U.S. office.
How to find director, product management visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship, and you can filter directly for director, product management roles in Washington DC. Because sponsorship willingness is not always stated in job postings, Migrate Mate surfaces employers with documented sponsorship history, saving significant research time. Given DC's concentration of government-adjacent tech firms, filtering by industry sector within Migrate Mate helps narrow toward employers most likely to sponsor at director level.
Which cities or areas in Washington DC have the most director, product management sponsorship jobs?
Washington DC itself is the primary hub, particularly around the K Street corridor and Navy Yard tech cluster where federal contractors and startups are concentrated. The broader DC metro area extends meaningful opportunity into Northern Virginia, especially Arlington and McLean, where firms like Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos are headquartered. Bethesda and Rockville in Maryland also host significant product leadership hiring tied to health technology and federal health agencies including NIH and the FDA.
Are there state-specific or role-specific considerations for director, product management visa sponsorship in Washington DC?
Security clearance eligibility is a practical factor in DC that is less relevant elsewhere. Many director-level product roles at federal contractors require or prefer candidates who can obtain a security clearance, which is generally available only to U.S. citizens or certain permanent residents, not visa holders. International candidates should prioritize employers with unclassified commercial or civilian agency product lines. Georgetown, George Mason, and American University supply strong local graduate pipelines, but competition at director level typically requires significant prior industry experience.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored director, product management jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
