How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant
Target specialty dental practices
Orthodontics, oral surgery, and periodontics practices are more likely to sponsor H-1B visas for expanded functions roles requiring specialized technical skills and training certificates.
Emphasize your specialized certifications
EFDA certifications in restorative functions, radiography licenses, and dental laboratory training strengthen your case for meeting specialty occupation requirements under H-1B criteria.
Research state licensing requirements
EFDA scope varies significantly by state. Target states where expanded functions require formal education or certification, as this supports the specialty occupation argument.
Consider dental service organizations
Large DSOs like Heartland Dental and Aspen Dental have established visa sponsorship processes and need EFDAs across multiple locations nationwide.
Document your technical expertise
Maintain records of specialized procedures you can perform, continuing education credits, and any dental laboratory or radiography training to demonstrate advanced qualifications.
Network through dental professional associations
ADAA and state dental assistant associations often have job boards and networking events where you can connect with practices open to visa sponsorship.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do I need a bachelor's degree for H-1B sponsorship as an EFDA?
Most EFDA positions require specialized training certificates rather than a four-year degree. For H-1B eligibility, you'll need either a bachelor's degree in a related field like dental hygiene or health sciences, or demonstrate that three years of specialized dental experience can substitute for each year of missing education under the experience equivalency rule.
Which dental practices are most likely to sponsor EFDAs for visas?
Specialty practices in orthodontics, oral surgery, and periodontics have higher sponsorship rates because they require advanced technical skills. Large dental service organizations and multi-location practices with established HR departments are also more equipped to handle visa sponsorship processes than single-dentist offices.
Can EFDAs qualify for other work visas besides H-1B?
Australian citizens can use the E-3 visa if the role meets specialty occupation standards. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify for TN status, though EFDA isn't a listed NAFTA profession, so you'd need to fit under a related category like 'Medical Technologist' with appropriate credentials and job duties documentation.
What makes an EFDA role qualify as a specialty occupation?
The position must require specialized knowledge typically gained through formal training. Roles involving restorative procedures, dental radiography, impression taking, and laboratory work have stronger cases. Employers must demonstrate the job requires technical expertise beyond basic dental assisting and that similar positions in the industry require specialized education or certification.
How do state licensing variations affect visa sponsorship for EFDAs?
States with stricter EFDA requirements strengthen your specialty occupation case. States requiring formal education, certification exams, or continuing education for expanded functions provide better documentation for H-1B petitions. Research target states' dental practice acts to understand which expanded functions require credentials that support visa applications.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Expanded Functions Dental Assistant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
