Top Industries for F-1 OPT Sponsorship
How to Get F-1 OPT Sponsorship
Start your H-1B search before OPT even begins
H-1B sponsorship requires employers to register for the lottery each March, with selected petitions filed by late June for an October 1 start date. If your OPT expires before October, you need a job offer and H-1B selection early enough to receive a cap-gap extension that bridges the gap without losing status.
Target companies with a track record of H-1B sponsorship
Larger tech, consulting, and financial services firms sponsor F-1 students far more consistently than small businesses. Companies like Deloitte, Amazon, and Infosys sponsor hundreds of international students annually.
STEM OPT extension buys you two extra years
If your degree is in a STEM field, you can extend OPT by 24 months. That gives employers more runway to sponsor your H-1B, which makes you significantly easier to hire than non-STEM graduates.
Filter job postings for explicit sponsorship language
Many employers state upfront whether they sponsor visas. Search Migrate Mate using the F-1 OPT filter to find postings from employers who have already confirmed they sponsor international students.
Your employer must be E-Verify enrolled for STEM OPT
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be registered with E-Verify. Confirm enrollment before accepting any offer, as non-enrolled employers cannot legally support your 24-month extension application.
Cap-exempt employers can sponsor H-1B outside the lottery
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government research organizations are exempt from the H-1B annual cap. Roles at these employers can be filed at any time, bypassing the April lottery entirely.

What is the difference between pre-completion and post-completion OPT?
Pre-completion OPT allows students to work while still enrolled, with any time used counting against the 12-month total. Post-completion OPT begins after graduation and is the most common form. Most students save their full 12 months for post-graduation employment. Work must be directly related to your major field of study regardless of which type you use.
How does the STEM OPT extension work?
Students with a degree in a STEM field listed on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List can apply for a 24-month extension before their initial 12-month OPT expires. The employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and agree to provide structured training under a formal development plan. The STEM extension must be filed while initial OPT is still valid.
Do employers need to do anything special to hire OPT workers?
For standard OPT, employers simply verify your Employment Authorization Document, the same as any other work-authorized employee. There is no petition or cost to the employer. For STEM OPT extensions, employers must be registered with E-Verify and sign a formal training plan. Many employers prefer OPT because there is no lottery or petition process involved.
What happens when OPT expires?
When OPT ends, you must either depart the U.S., change to another visa status, or be selected in the H-1B lottery. Many employers use the OPT period to evaluate international employees and then sponsor an H-1B or other work visa. If you are not selected in the H-1B lottery during your STEM OPT, you may face a gap period that can be bridged through a cap-exempt employer or other status.
How do I find OPT-friendly employers?
Migrate Mate filters jobs by F-1 OPT sponsorship so you can identify which employers actively hire on this work authorization. OPT is low-friction for employers compared to visa petitions, so many companies are open to it even if they hesitate at H-1B. Targeting companies already enrolled in E-Verify is a good strategy for STEM OPT, as they are prepared for the additional requirements.
How long do I have to find a job after OPT expires?
After your OPT employment authorization end date, you have a 60-day grace period to either depart the U.S., change to another immigration status, or transfer to a new school. You cannot work during this grace period. If you are on STEM OPT, the same 60-day grace period applies after your extension end date.
When do I need an H-1B offer to avoid a gap after OPT?
H-1B registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. If your standard 12-month OPT ends before October 1, you will need a STEM OPT extension or another status to bridge the gap. If you are selected in the H-1B lottery and your OPT is still valid, you receive an automatic cap-gap extension that lets you continue working until your H-1B takes effect on October 1. Planning ahead is critical — start your employer sponsorship conversation well before the March registration deadline.
