Target industries with established sponsorship track records
Manufacturing, medical devices, oil and gas, and industrial automation companies sponsor Field Service Managers consistently. These industries rely on technical talent pipelines and have HR teams experienced with H-1B and E-3 petitions.
Frame your degree as directly tied to the role
USCIS requires specialty occupation status, so your application needs to show your engineering or technical degree is a baseline requirement for the position, not just a preference. Generic management degrees without a technical component create risk.
Prioritize employers with existing H-1B filing history
Companies that have filed H-1B petitions for similar roles before understand the process and are less likely to withdraw sponsorship mid-application. Ask recruiters directly whether they have sponsored this title before.
Highlight technical certifications alongside your degree
Certifications in field service management tools, safety systems, or equipment-specific training strengthen your specialty occupation argument. They show the role demands expertise beyond what a general business or management background provides.
Understand the difference between E-3 and H-1B sponsorship
Australian citizens can use the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and significantly shorter processing times than H-1B. If you hold an Australian passport, make this clear to employers early since it removes lottery uncertainty from their decision.
Negotiate sponsorship terms before signing an offer
Confirm whether the employer covers filing fees, legal costs, and premium processing before accepting. Some companies cap their contributions or require repayment clauses if you leave within a set period. Get these terms in writing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Field Service Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but it depends on how the job is defined. USCIS requires that a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field, such as mechanical engineering or electrical engineering, be the normal minimum for entry into the role. Field Service Manager positions tied to complex technical systems, medical equipment, or industrial machinery are more likely to qualify than generalist operations management roles where any bachelor's degree satisfies the requirement.
What degree do I need for a Field Service Manager to get visa sponsorship?
Most employers sponsoring this role require a bachelor's degree in engineering, electronics, or a closely related technical field. A degree in business administration or general management is less likely to support a successful H-1B visa petition because it doesn't establish the specialized knowledge USCIS looks for. If your degree isn't in a technical field, documented work experience in the specific equipment or systems you'll be managing can help, though it doesn't eliminate the risk.
Which industries are most likely to sponsor a Field Service Manager?
Medical device companies, industrial automation firms, oil and gas equipment manufacturers, and defense contractors sponsor this title most frequently. These industries rely on technically trained managers who understand the equipment their teams service, and they have established immigration programs. Companies like Siemens, GE HealthCare, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Honeywell have visible H-1B filing histories for field service and technical management roles. Browse current openings on Migrate Mate to find employers actively hiring with sponsorship.
Can I get sponsored as a Field Service Manager on an E-3 visa if I'm Australian?
Yes. The E-3 visa is available exclusively to Australian citizens and covers specialty occupations, which includes Field Service Manager roles tied to technical disciplines. Unlike the H-1B, there's no lottery and processing typically takes two to six weeks after your visa interview. Your employer still needs to file a Labor Condition Application, but the overall timeline is far more predictable, which makes sponsorship conversations with employers considerably easier.
How common is visa sponsorship for Field Service Manager roles?
Sponsorship exists but is concentrated in specific industries and company sizes. Large multinationals and mid-size manufacturers with active field service divisions sponsor most frequently. Smaller companies or regional service providers rarely have the infrastructure to manage visa petitions. H-1B approval rates for operations and engineering management roles have historically been strong when the specialty occupation argument is well-documented. Focusing your search on employers with prior sponsorship history improves your odds significantly.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Field Service Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
