Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Functional Consultant
Target consulting firms with established visa programs
Large consulting firms like Deloitte, Accenture, and Capgemini have dedicated immigration teams and sponsor H-1B visas routinely. They understand the LCA and I-129 process, which makes sponsorship faster and less risky for both sides.
Emphasize your ERP or platform specialization
Employers justify H-1B sponsorship by proving the role requires a degree in a specific field. Specializing in SAP, Oracle, or Salesforce strengthens that case significantly. Generalist consultants are harder to sponsor than platform-certified specialists.
Understand how L-1 visas apply to your situation
If you currently work for a multinational firm abroad, the L-1B visa for specialized knowledge is often faster than H-1B because it bypasses the lottery. Ask your employer whether an intracompany transfer to a U.S. office is possible.
Get your degree equivalency documented early
Many Functional Consultants hold three-year bachelor's degrees from India, Australia, or the UK. USCIS may not automatically accept these as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree. A credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency resolves this before it becomes a problem.
Time your H-1B application around the lottery window
H-1B registrations open in March each year for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, confirm your STEM extension timeline aligns. Missing the filing window means waiting another full year, so plan your job search accordingly.
Use Migrate Mate to identify active sponsors
Not every employer willing to hire a Functional Consultant is willing to sponsor a visa. Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles with sponsorship availability, saving you from pursuing positions that will dead-end at the offer stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Functional Consultant role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS requires that the role normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific specialty. Functional Consultant positions tied to ERP platforms like SAP or Oracle consistently meet this standard because employers require degrees in computer science, information systems, or business. Generic consulting roles with broad degree requirements face higher RFE rates, so your job description and employer support letter need to reflect the specific technical requirements of the role.
What visa options exist for Functional Consultants beyond the H-1B?
The L-1B visa is a strong alternative if you work for a multinational company and can transfer to a U.S. office. It requires demonstrating specialized knowledge of your employer's systems or processes and bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. The O-1A is available if you have documented achievements like publications, speaking engagements, or awards in the field. TN visa status applies if you're a Canadian or Mexican national with a qualifying degree. Each path has different employer requirements, so matching the right visa to your situation matters.
Will my three-year bachelor's degree be accepted for an H-1B as a Functional Consultant?
It depends on how the petition is structured. USCIS does not automatically recognize three-year degrees from India, the UK, or Australia as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree. However, a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved organization can establish equivalency, especially when combined with relevant work experience. Immigration attorneys often use the three-for-one rule, where three years of specialized work experience substitutes for one year of formal education, to bridge any gap. Request the evaluation before your employer files the petition.
How do I find Functional Consultant jobs that actually offer visa sponsorship?
Most job postings don't clearly state whether sponsorship is available, which wastes significant time during a job search. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this problem, listing roles from employers who have confirmed they sponsor work visas. Filtering by Functional Consultant roles on Migrate Mate surfaces positions where sponsorship is part of the offer rather than an afterthought you negotiate later.
Can I switch employers as a Functional Consultant while on an H-1B?
Yes, H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you haven't accrued unlawful presence. The new employer files a new I-129 with a new LCA. Because Functional Consultant roles involve project-based work, make sure your new employer's petition reflects the actual duties of the new role rather than copying your previous job description, which can trigger an RFE.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Functional Consultant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
