Lead with cloud and orchestration depth
Employers sponsoring H-1B visas for this role expect hands-on expertise with Kubernetes, Terraform, or AWS. Specialization in specific platforms signals the complexity that justifies a specialty occupation petition and strengthens your application.
Clarify your degree field upfront
USCIS scrutinizes whether your degree directly relates to the role. A degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or information systems maps cleanly. If your field is adjacent, gather documentation showing how your coursework aligns with infrastructure engineering requirements.
Target companies with cap-exempt status
Universities, nonprofits, and government research organizations can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the lottery. Infrastructure roles at these employers offer a faster, more predictable path to work authorization than standard cap-subject filings.
Highlight SRE and DevOps crossover strategically
If your background spans site reliability engineering or DevOps, frame it around platform infrastructure responsibilities. USCIS approvals are tied to job duties, so ensuring the petition accurately reflects infrastructure work, not generalist software development, matters significantly.
Consider the L-1A or L-1B if transferring internally
Multinational employers can sponsor an intracompany transfer visa without entering any lottery. Infrastructure Platform Engineers with one year of tenure at an overseas parent or affiliate are strong L-1B candidates based on specialized infrastructure knowledge.
Build a paper trail of system ownership
Documentation showing you own and architect infrastructure systems, not just maintain them, supports both H-1B specialty occupation arguments and O-1 extraordinary ability petitions. Performance reviews, architecture diagrams, and incident postmortems all serve as useful evidence.

Find Infrastructure Platform Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an Infrastructure Platform Engineer role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. Infrastructure Platform Engineer consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation because the role requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related engineering field. USCIS has approved this job title at scale. The key is ensuring the petition clearly describes duties that require theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, not general IT support.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor me in this role?
Most employers and USCIS petitions for this title require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or a closely related field. A general business or unrelated science degree creates risk in the petition. If your degree is adjacent, supplementing with certifications, such as AWS Solutions Architect or Certified Kubernetes Administrator, strengthens the specialty occupation argument.
How can I find Infrastructure Platform Engineer jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse Infrastructure Platform Engineer openings from employers already willing to sponsor H-1B, O-1, or other work visas. This removes the guesswork of cold-applying to companies that may not sponsor, which saves significant time during a job search.
Are Infrastructure Platform Engineers at risk of H-1B denials or RFEs?
Request for Evidence rates for platform and infrastructure engineering roles are lower than for generalist software roles, but USCIS still scrutinizes whether every duty requires a specialized degree. The most common RFE trigger is a job description that includes generalist tasks like basic troubleshooting or helpdesk support. Employers should ensure the petition and supporting job description reflect senior-level infrastructure architecture responsibilities.
Can I get sponsored on an O-1 visa as an Infrastructure Platform Engineer?
Yes, though O-1A requires demonstrating extraordinary ability through evidence like conference presentations, published articles, open-source contributions with significant adoption, or recognition from peers in the infrastructure or platform engineering community. Engineers who have led critical infrastructure at high-scale companies, contributed to major open-source projects, or spoken at events like KubeCon have a credible O-1A case worth exploring with an immigration attorney.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Infrastructure Platform Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
