How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Learning And Development Specialist
Target industries with dedicated L&D budgets
Large enterprises in healthcare, finance, and technology maintain structured training departments and are far more likely to sponsor visas for Learning and Development roles than small businesses or startups without formal HR infrastructure.
Frame your degree as a direct match
USCIS requires your degree field to align with the role. A background in instructional design, organizational psychology, human resources, or education strengthens your specialty occupation case and reduces the risk of an H-1B denial.
Highlight measurable training outcomes
Sponsoring employers need to justify the petition to USCIS. Quantifying your impact, such as completion rates, knowledge retention scores, or reduced onboarding time, makes you a stronger candidate worth the sponsorship investment.
Pursue roles with LMS or eLearning platform experience
Employers consistently sponsor L&D Specialists who bring technical skills in platforms like Workday Learning or Cornerstone. Technical specialization strengthens the specialty occupation argument and differentiates you from general HR candidates.
Engage HR leadership early in the offer process
Sponsorship decisions are often made before an offer is extended. Raising it directly with the hiring manager or HR business partner early avoids late-stage surprises and identifies whether the company has sponsored before.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Learning and Development Specialist role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, Learning and Development Specialist positions generally qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B rules when the role requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as instructional design, human resources, education, or organizational development. Roles that accept any degree regardless of field can face USCIS scrutiny, so the job description wording matters significantly.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor my L&D Specialist visa?
Most sponsoring employers require a bachelor's degree in human resources, instructional design, education, organizational psychology, or a closely related field. A general business degree may be accepted if your coursework heavily emphasized training and development. Employers and immigration attorneys look for a direct relationship between your degree field and the specific duties of the L&D role.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for Learning and Development roles compared to tech jobs?
L&D Specialist roles appear far less frequently in H-1B filings than software engineering positions, which means less competition within the occupation itself. However, the overall H-1B lottery applies regardless of job title, so your odds depend on the annual cap selection rate. Companies in healthcare, financial services, and large enterprise tech file the most L&D-related petitions.
Can I find Learning and Development Specialist jobs that sponsor visas on Migrate Mate?
Yes. Migrate Mate is designed specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship and lists Learning and Development roles at employers with documented sponsorship history. Filtering by this job title on Migrate Mate surfaces opportunities where sponsorship is a realistic option, rather than requiring you to guess which employers will consider it.
Does prior L&D experience in another country count toward H-1B eligibility?
Yes, international work experience in learning and development can substitute for a portion of the degree requirement under USCIS rules, with three years of relevant experience equating to one year of education. If your degree is from a non-U.S. institution, a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved organization confirms its U.S. equivalency, which your employer's immigration attorney will typically arrange.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Learning And Development Specialist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
