About The Team
Our Robotics team is focused on unlocking general-purpose robotics and pushing towards AGI-level intelligence in dynamic, real-world settings. Working across the entire model stack, we integrate cutting-edge hardware and software to explore a broad range of robotic form factors. We strive to seamlessly blend high-level AI capabilities with the constraints of physical systems to improve peoples’ lives.
About The Role
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, integration, and sustaining engineering of mechanical subsystems in robotic platforms. You will work closely with experienced engineers and cross-functional partners to set functional requirements, develop and iterate on hardware to meet program expectations. This role is aimed at candidates with strong fundamentals in mechanical system design — including tolerance, alignment, load paths, wear, and failure modes — and robotics. You will contribute to real hardware programs moving from prototype through early production. You will lead both new subsystem development and ongoing improvements to existing systems based on testing, field performance, and manufacturing feedback.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA, and requires in-person presence 4 days a week.
In this role, you will
- Lead the design and iteration of mechanical subsystems, including structures, mechanisms, and actuators.
- Create and maintain CAD models, assemblies, and drawings with appropriate tolerancing and documentation.
- Build and test prototypes, supporting debugging of mechanical issues such as fit, alignment, friction, and wear.
- Assist in developing test methods and executing validation to evaluate performance, durability, and failure modes.
- Work with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical components with sensors, actuators, and control systems.
- Support transition of designs from prototype to manufacturable assemblies, incorporating DFM and DFA considerations.
- Collaborate with manufacturing partners and internal build teams to support assembly, troubleshooting, and process improvement.
- Analyze test results and field data to identify issues and drive iterative design improvements.
- Document designs, test results, and changes to support repeatability and production readiness.
- Support sustaining engineering efforts by investigating failures, tracking issues, and implementing corrective actions.
You might thrive in this role if you
- Have strong mechanical intuition and have previous experience lead mechanical design for robotic subsystems.
- Enjoy hands-on work building, testing, and debugging physical systems.
- Are comfortable iterating quickly and learning from incomplete or evolving requirements.
- Can break down problems and work through details such as tolerances, interfaces, and assembly constraints.
- Are proactive in seeking feedback and alignment with cross-functional partners.
- Are detail-oriented and value clear documentation and repeatability.
- Have experience scaling physical products from prototyping through high volume production.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years experience in mechanical design, robotics, or electromechanical systems.
- Experience with CAD tools (e.g., NX, SolidWorks, or similar).
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as machining, molding, or basic fabrication methods.
- Familiarity with high volume GD&T, engineering drawings and tolerancing practices.
- Experience with prototyping, lab work, or hardware bring-up.
- Experience working on multidisciplinary projects involving hardware and software integration.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Mechanical Design Engineer
Highlight CAD and simulation expertise
Emphasize proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, ANSYS, or similar tools. Specific software skills demonstrate the specialized knowledge required for H-1B specialty occupation requirements.
Target manufacturing and product development companies
Focus on aerospace, automotive, consumer goods, and industrial equipment manufacturers. These industries regularly sponsor visas and value mechanical design expertise for competitive advantage.
Demonstrate project complexity in applications
Document experience with product lifecycles, design validation, and cross-functional collaboration. Complex engineering projects strengthen the case for requiring specialized degree-level knowledge.
Consider defense contractors with security clearance paths
Major defense contractors sponsor visas and offer pathways to security clearances for permanent residents. These roles often lead to long-term career stability.
Prepare for technical interviews with portfolio examples
Create a portfolio showing design process, problem-solving approach, and measurable outcomes. Technical depth helps employers justify the specialty occupation requirement to USCIS.
Research state-specific engineering licensing requirements
Some positions may require or prefer Professional Engineer licensing. Understanding state requirements shows commitment and can differentiate candidates in competitive sponsorship decisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do mechanical design engineers qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, mechanical design engineers typically qualify for H-1B visas with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field. The role meets specialty occupation requirements because it requires specific technical knowledge in engineering principles, CAD software, and materials science that directly relates to the degree field.
How to find Mechanical Design Engineer jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Mechanical Design Engineer jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international professionals with sponsored opportunities. Focus on aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and engineering consulting companies that commonly sponsor H-1B, TN visa, and other work visas for technical roles. These employers actively seek skilled mechanical engineers for product development and design positions.
What degree do I need for mechanical design engineer visa sponsorship?
You need a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a closely related engineering field. Some employers accept degrees in physics or applied mathematics with relevant engineering experience. The degree must be from an accredited institution, and foreign degrees may require credential evaluation.
Which visa types work best for mechanical design engineers?
H-1B is most common for mechanical design engineers, with good approval rates due to clear degree requirements. Australians can use E-3 visas, while Canadians and Mexicans qualify for TN status under the engineer category. O-1 visas are possible for engineers with exceptional achievements or patents.
Do mechanical design engineers face higher H-1B denial rates?
No, mechanical design engineers typically have lower denial rates than average because the role clearly requires specialized engineering knowledge that matches degree requirements. USCIS recognizes engineering positions as legitimate specialty occupations, especially when job duties involve complex design, analysis, and technical problem-solving.
Can I get visa sponsorship without a mechanical engineering degree?
It's challenging but possible with a related engineering degree plus relevant experience. Physics, applied mathematics, or other engineering degrees may work if combined with mechanical design experience. Some cases use the three-years-experience-for-one-year-education rule, but this significantly complicates the petition process.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Mechanical Design Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
